It is found in the undergrowth of humid forests, especially near the edges, at altitudes of {{convert|300|to|1200|m|ft}} in Panama and Costa Rica.[3][4] TaxonomyThe Costa Rican brush finch is often treated as a subspecies of the stripe-headed brush finch (A. torquatus), but was determined a distinct species, together with the black-headed brush finch, on the basis of differences in vocalization, plumage, and genetics.[5] References1. ^BirdLife International. 2016.
