C. and I. B. Cushman.[3] It was a mile east of the community of Acme, but the railroad already had a station named Acme, so the name "Cushman" was chosen instead.[3] The post office was moved from Acme in 1916 and renamed to match the station; it closed in 1961.[3] Cushman has a historic store that was built in 1889 and expanded in 1925, and there is a swing span railroad bridge across the river there.[4][5] The bridge opened to allow ocean-going barges to reach a now-closed sawmill in Mapleton.[6][7] In 1940, Cushman had a population of 145 and a full-service port.[8] At that time the hills above the community produced Port Orford-cedar, a large evergreen coniferous tree native to the region, but by 1990, this resource was depleted and the port no longer served ocean-going vessels.[4] References1. ^1 {{cite gnis|id=1140573|name= Cushman|entrydate= 1980-11-28 |accessdate= 2011-10-19}} 2. ^{{cite book |title= Oregon Atlas & Gazetteer |edition= 7th |year= 2008 |publisher= DeLorme |location= Yarmouth, Maine |isbn= 0-89933-347-8 |page= 38}} 3. ^1 2 {{Cite OGN|7th|pages= 262–263}} 4. ^1 {{cite book |title= In Search of Western Oregon |author= Friedman, Ralph |authorlink= Ralph Friedman |year= 1990 |edition= 2nd |page= 213 |publisher= The Caxton Printers, Ltd |location= Caldwell, Idaho |isbn= 0-87004-332-3}} 5. ^{{cite web |url= http://www.lanegov.com/BCC_Info/Meeting_Info/2004/OrderText/6-15/PA1203_6.pdf |title= Unincorporated Rural Community of Cushman: Developed and Committed Exception Area No. 039-3 |publisher= Lane County, Oregon |accessdate= 2010-01-05}} 6. ^{{cite book |url= https://books.google.com/books?id=V8gJTJe6ePIC&printsec=frontcover&dq=Ralph+Friedman&cd=3#v=onepage&q=Cushman&f=false |title= Oregon for the Curious |author= Friedman, Ralph |authorlink= Ralph Friedman |origyear= 1972 |year= 1993 |edition= 3rd |page= 46 |publisher= Pars Publishing Company |location= Portland, Oregon |isbn= 0-87004-222-X}} 7. ^{{cite news |url= http://portland.bizjournals.com/portland/stories/2004/02/02/daily30.html |work= Portland Business Journal |date= 2004-02-04 |title= Davidson to close Oregon sawmill |accessdate= 2010-01-05}} 8. ^{{cite book |url= https://archive.org/stream/oregonendoftrail00writrich#page/350/mode/2up/search/Cushman |title= Oregon: End of the Trail |author= Writers' Program of the Work Projects Administration in the State of Oregon |series= American Guide Series |year= 1940 |publisher= Binfords & Mort |location= Portland, Oregon |page= 351 |oclc= 4874569}} External links
