According to the game's IGF entry, the budget was $4000.[5] It was published by GarageGames for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.[4]For the version 2.0 update the game, Max Gaming Technologies added significant updates and changes to the game, so that the developer changed the title of Dark Horizons Lore to "Dark Horizons Lore: Invasion". Although it was originally a commercially sold title, the game was made a free download on end of support in 2007.[6][7] The game's community created later unofficial patches to continue the support.[8] In 2008 also the multiplayer servers were shut down.[9] In 2013, there was a try to crowdfund a successor.[10][11] Despite the unsuccessful campaign the successor was released later on Steam,[12] as "Early access" game. GameplayThe game is a mixture between first-person shooters games such as Unreal Tournament 2004 and mecha simulation games such as MechWarrior (similar to Mobile Armor Division and Hawken). The player can select between two different factions and various MAV types, with each being equipped with unique abilities and weapons. You can also customize your MAV to some extent, such as being able to trade speed for armour or vice versa. The game has support for various playing modes, such as equivalents of Deathmatch and Capture the Flag. Players can switch between first-person or third-person view while playing the game. Although primarily focused on multiplayer, single-player is allowed through the use of computer-controlled bots. StoryThe game takes place in a futuristic world in the year 2155 where several factions are battling for control over the planet.[13] The most important of these are the Federated States and the Eastern Confederation.[14] They are fighting over "No Man's Land", what was once North America. Due to high levels of radiation, soldiers fight each other through the use of Mechanized Assault Vehicles, machines connected and remotely controlled by the minds of their pilots.[15] ReceptionThe game was positively received by critics, with GameShark commenting that "is easily on par with any major title from a top of the line publisher."[3] gametunnel rated the game highly, praising its multiplayer on-line game-play, although being more critical of its single-player mode.[16] JUEGOSLIBRES.net also praised the game, although it did state that the games graphics and sounds were not on par with some other games.[17] The game also currently holds a four star rating at The Linux Game Tome.[18] The game was a finalist, placed second, at the Independent Game Festival 2005 "Open category".[19][20] References1. ^Dark Horizons: Lore Invasion - Linux IGN 2. ^Dark Horizons: Lore Invasion - Windows IGN 3. ^1 2 Dark Horizons Lore Invasion Review GameShark, March 18, 2005 4. ^1 DH: Lore Invasion Brings the Battle to GarageGames GameZone, March 21, 2005 5. ^[https://web.archive.org/web/20051120130202/http://www.igf.com/php-bin/entries2005.php?entry_id=91 2005 IGF Competition Entrants Dark Horizons Lore] at IGF (archived) 6. ^1 [https://web.archive.org/web/20080306071119/http://www.linuxgames.com/archives/9861 Dark Horizons: Lore Free to Download; New GarageGames Project] LinuxGames, December 24th, 2007 (archived) 7. ^[https://web.archive.org/web/20080325104439/http://www.garagegames.com/products/29/ Dark Horizons: Lore Invasion] on garagegames.com 8. ^[https://web.archive.org/web/20090109194053/http://www.darkhorizons-lore.com/forum_viewtopic.php?7.17799 SkunkWorks Community patch, now available.] on darkhorizons-lore.com (2009) 9. ^[https://web.archive.org/web/20090217152314/http://darkhorizons-lore.com/news.php darkhorizons-lore.com/news ] 10. ^[https://www.golem.de/news/max-gaming-unterstuetzer-fuer-indie-mech-spiel-gesucht-1211-95455.html max-gaming-unterstuetzer-fuer-indie-mech-spiel-gesucht] on golem.de (in German) 11. ^[https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/162475234/dh-mechanized-assault-vehicle DH: Mechanized Assault Vehicle] 12. ^DH: Mechanized Assault Vehicle on steam.com 13. ^Dark Horizons Lore Invasion Linux Game Guru 14. ^Dark Horizons: Lore Invasion Review gametunnel 15. ^Dark Horizons Lore: Invasion GarageGames 16. ^Dark Horizons Lore: Invasion Review gametunnel 17. ^Dark Horizons Lore: Invasion Review JUEGOSLIBRES.net 18. ^Dark Horizons Lore: Invasion The Linux Game Tome 19. ^[https://www.tigsource.com/2008/07/27/ye-olde-tigsource-part-6/ ye-olde-tigsource-part-6] on tigsource.com (2008) 20. ^[https://web.archive.org/web/20060220103026/http://www.igf.com/2005entrants.shtml Open Category Finalist] at igf.com "Alien Hominid, Dark Horizons Lore, Gish" (archived) External links
