The paper was established by German political activists who fled the German states after the failed revolution of 1848. In its early years, the paper was intensely anti-monarchist and opposed to the Catholic Church, which it viewed as supporting the ancient regime. The paper was active in stirring up feelings against Cardinal Gaetano Bedini's visit to Cincinnati that led to the Riot of 1853.[2][3] Carl Otto Reventlow became editor in 1857. See also
