As of December 2010, Dilettante Music has been taken off-line, citing financial difficulties.[3] HistoryDilettante was founded in January 2008 by Juliana Farha, a Canadian journalist and businesswoman who believed that social media was the ideal tool to support classical music and musicians.[4] Digital Composer-in-ResidenceIn 2009 Dilettante held a 'Digital Composer-in-Residence' competition which was the first such position to be offered anywhere in the world.[5] The competition consisted of a preliminary period where applicants were judged on their compositions by a judging panel including Nico Muhly, Michael Christie[6] and Jennifer Higdon, a period with voting open to the public, and a final event held at Wilton's Music Hall, London. The final took place on November 5, 2009 and was presented by conductor Charles Hazlewood. The finalists were Canadian Aaron Gervais, Taiwanese Chiayu and American David T. Little, whose compositions were performed by the London Sinfonietta alongside works that inspired them, including pieces by "great modernist iconoclasts, Charles Ives and Gyorgy Ligeti... [and] Jonathan Harvey, a composer of lofty spiritual inclinations."[7] The title was won by David T. Little who took a £1,000 prize and has a dedicated section on the website. AwardsIn 2009, Dilettante was shortlisted for 'Website of the Year' on The Good Web Guide, who said that the site "aims to break down the barriers to classical music by connecting organisations and musicians with audiences, listeners with recorded and live music, and members of the worldwide classical community with each other.".[8] Notes1. ^http://www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/1269491/classical-web-portal-dilettante-expands 2. ^{{Cite news|url=http://www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/1269491/classical-web-portal-dilettante-expands|title=Classical Web Portal Dilettante Expands|newspaper=Billboard|access-date=2016-12-15}} 3. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.dilettantemusic.com/|title=Dilettante Music|website=www.dilettantemusic.com|access-date=2016-12-15}} 4. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.artsjournal.com/lifesapitch/2009/06/talk_to_me_about_dilettante/|title=Talk to me about Dilettante|date=2009-06-25|newspaper=Life's A Pitch|language=en-US|access-date=2016-12-15}} 5. ^http://www.bbcmusicmagazine.com/news/world%E2%80%99s-first-digital-composer-residence 6. ^http://www.artsjournal.com/realcleararts/2009/11/composer-competition.html 7. ^https://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/music/classicalmusic/6486015/Composers-in-Cyberspace.html 8. ^http://www.thegoodwebguide.co.uk/?PAGEID=012172 1 : Music websites |
