Agudath Israel was the first Hungarian Jewish congregation in Chicago, Illinois. It was founded by ten recent Hungarian immigrants on October 25, 1884 (the date that Simchat Torah fell on in that year). At this first meeting, it was resolved to elect only such men to the presidency who did not violate the Jewish Sabbath. On March 3, 1885, the congregation moved to a rented appartment at 498 South Halsted Street. From its inception, the congregation supported a religious school.

In 1888, the congregation, which by then had eighty members, purchased a Baptist church at 307 Maxwell Street.

The congregation continued to grow over the next decades. In June 1903, the congregation retained a Hungarian Rabbi named M. Fischer. In February 1905, the congregation purchased property at the corner of Marshfield Avenue and Polk Street, on which they erected a $50,000 Synagogue in 1906.
