Angela Szczepaniak is is a Canadian literary academic and writer. Szczpaniak was raised in rural southern Ontario. She has taught and written in Toronto, Montreal, and Buffalo, New York. Her poetry explores "desire as affliction" and features "an eloquent mash-up of poetry, prose, dialogue, monologue, snippets and shavings."

Early Life

Angela Szczepaniak was born in Brampton, Ontario, and grew up in Lindsey, Ontario.

As early as elementary school, Szczepaniak discovered she did not like traditional approaches to poetry. "I'd been taught in elementary and highschool that poetry was about wrenching emotion and confession, which I had an active, hostile lack of interest in reading or writing. When I discovered they could be about things like form and language, and that it could even have a sense of humour I reconsidered."

Education

In 2002, Szczepaniak entered the doctoral program at the State University of New York at Buffalo. At present, she is "neck-deep in a PhD (at SUNY Buffalo), happily reading and writing about comics, innovative detective literature, and poetry."

Early Works

Using whimsical pseudonyms such as Pork Chiles (taken from an Alice Munro story), Szczepaniak began publishing poetry through various York University journals (1994-8).

Szczepaniak's debut book of poetry, Unisex Love Poems, follows a history of publishing. Before Unisex, Szczepaniak's work appeared in numerous publications:

Unisex Love Poems

In 2008, DC Books published Szczepaniak's debut book-length work, Unisex Love Poems, in 2008.

A mixture of genres, Unisex "sutures swatches of fiction, poetry, etiquette advice, slapstick legal antics, and gruesomely illustrated recipes for sweetbreads and love letters into a parody of manners and conduct. An autopsy of language, it makes you savour the visceral, tangible quality of the word."

The book fuses scripts, comics, prose and poetry. Szczepaniak has referred to her work as "novular poetry" (a novel in poems), but acknowledges that "[the word 'novular'] hasn't really caught on."

Unisex Love Poems has met with a positive critical reception. The Globe and Mail's Books section noted that the concept of Unisex is "fascinating" and the book's "contortions - fresh, witty and poignant - are worth entanglement."

Writer Rebecca Rosenblum confessed that "[a]bout halfway through reading Unisex Love Poems, I dropped the book in a dish of ice-cream while sitting in a cafe. As I began to clean it off with the only implement available, my tongue, it did occur to me that it's been a long time since I've seen a better book to lick."

Szczepaniak's original artwork, featured in Unisex, was displayed as part of the Infusoria exhibit, which toured several Belgian art galleries. The drawings depicted "Honeycombed Hearts," "Heart Bundles" and a "Lover's Feast."

Szczepaniak has also read from Unisex in Buffalo, Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa. Her reading was featured in a 2009 Chicago Public Radio broadcast.

Forthcoming Work

In Spring 2011, Szczepaniak will publish The QWERTY Institute of Cosmetic Typographical Enhancement, what she calls "a suite of visual fictions." It will be divided into four parts: two parts made of cartoons, and two made of novellas.
