Two key figures are considered the founders of the school, Hayami Nagato no Kami Enshin and Inugami Sakon no Shogen Nagakatsu. Both men were samurai in service as guards to the Emperor Ogimachi and responsible for defending the north gate of Gosho (the Imperial palace in Kyoto). Inugami Sakon no Shogen Nagakatsu studied a system of kumiuchi called Hyoho Kumiuchi Kenden with Hayami Nagato no Kami Enshin who was an expert in kumiuchi. This style they practiced together was combined with "reiken", the fighting style passed down through the Inugami household. The new style that evolved from their collaboration was to be called Enshin Ryu, or Kumiuchi Hyoho Enshin Ryu. Sources
