Harold J. Hill was a veterinarian known for his pioneering work in theriogenology. He specialized in bovine reproduction, and worked with the Eisenhower Administration to bring the Charolais breed of cattle to the United States. He was a leader in research for artificial insemination, semen collection, semen storage, genetics and line breeding in the beef industry.[1]

Early Life

Dr. Hill was born December 13, 1922 in New Hampshire where he was raised on a farm. He began his schooling in a small one room school and chose to further his education at Middlesex University which is now Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass. He later went to Michigan State University to work toward his Veterinary Degree. He completed his Veterinary training in the late 1940's at Colorado State University, College of Veterinary Medicine in Fort Collins, Colo.[1]

Teaching Career

After graduation he joined the teaching staff at Colorado State University and developed a specialty in reproductive medicine. Here he was a leader in the field of theriogenology, a branch of veterinary medicine concerned with reproduction, including the physiology and pathology of male and female. He is recognized for his contributions to the profession by the American Veterinary Medical Association. While at Colorado State University he started the bull farm where he continued his research to improve bovine and equine artificial insemination, semen collection, semen storage, genetics and line breeding in the beef industry. He developed a curriculum in reproduction at Colorado State University hiring two doctors well known for their work in reproductive medicine.

He left Colorado State University in the late 1950's to join the research staff at Armour & Company. He was also known for playing an active role at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colo.[1]

Later Life

After suffering a severe back injury he was no longer able to work with large animals and moved to small animal medicine. In 1965 he bought a small animal hospital in Imperial Beach, CA. He owned and operated the hospital until 1990 when he sold the practice to Dr. Mccoy, who had worked for Dr. Hill at the hospital since 1976[2]. Dr. Hill began to work at the San Diego zoo to study and improve reproduction of wild animals. There he worked with former head of the pathology department at Colorado State Dr. Lynn Griner, who was head of veterinary services at the San Diego Zoo. Dr. Hill served on special AVMA boards and committees and was a longtime member of the California Veterinary Medical Association and the San Diego County Veterinary Medical Association.[1]

The Hill's Professorship of Animal Biotechnology

Anthony, PhD, Professor Department of Biomedical Sciences, was named in honor of Dr. Hill's "a pioneer in the area of artificial insemination of cattle in the intermountain region and contributor to scholarly and outreach activities at the Colorado State University Animal Reproduction and Biotechnology Laboratory.[3]"
