James Alexander George Smith (February 4, 1879 - April 20, 1942), "The People's Champion," was a Jamaican barrister and politician. In 1891, he was the first student in the history of the Ruseas High School of Lucea, Jamaica, to pass the Civil Service Examination.[1] He became a Third Class Clerk in Kingston's Post Office Department on February 1, 1892.[2] On April 1, 1896, he was appointed Junior Assistant Clerk of the Courts in St. Ann's Bay.[3] In 1899, he was transferred to Kingston to serve as a Junior Assistant Clerk of the Central Courts there.[4] Beginning in March of 1899, he spent five months serving in the Inspector General's Office at the General Pentitentiary.[5] In September of 1901, he was transferred to Clarendon, and in December of that year, he was made Deputy Clerk of the Courts.[6] On March 31, 1906, he was transferred back to Kingston to serve as as Junior Assistant Clerk of the Courts there again.[7] He chafed at the lack of promotion, however, and on October 11, 1906, he secured a nine-month leave of absence and left Jamaica for England to enroll in Lincoln's Inn. He was elected to Jamaica's Legislative Council for the first time in 1917, and was re-elected in every election afterward until his death in 1942. References1. ^Johnson, Anthony. J.A.G.
