The Solunar Theory is a theory that purports fish and animal activity varies from day to day depending on the position of the sun and moon - hence the term, solunar.[1]. The Solunar Theory is attributed to John Alden Knight (1890-1966), an sportswriter and avid outdoorsman of the mid-20th century, who developed his theory in the late 1920's from folklore and first-hand accounts from acquaintances that the best fishing times and best hunting times occur at specific time points each day[2] Knight formalized his Solunar Theory after many years of observation in the field. He examined 33 variables to see their effect on fish and game and determined that the critical factors were the sun, moon, and tides. His observations led him to theorize that fish and animal activity peaks each day when the moon is positioned overhead (transit) and underfoot. He hypothesized that that these are the times when the combined gravitational forces of the sun and moon are the strongest. He named these peak activity times, Major Periods. He also noted that fish and game activity peaked around the time that the moon rose and the time that the moon set, and he named these time frames, Minor Periods. He also noted that the intensity of the Major and Minor periods varied throughout the month with the greatest levels occurring around a full moon or new moon and the weakest intensity occurring around first-quarter and last-quarter moons. Knight described his rationale for the formation of the Solunar Theory and cited recounts numerous anecdotes of success with his theory in his book, Moon Up, Moon Down.
Knight published a compilation of the solunar periods as solunar tables[4], which continue to be distributed in various forms worldwide by newspapers, magazines, websites, and mobile devices.
