The M Team is a British action adventure television series about a fictional group of parody superheroes who work as the antithesis to superheroes such as Batman and Spiderman, who however do not feature in the programmes. The M Team was created by writers Emma Geraghty, Eleanor Maxwell and Gemma Barnshaw (who are also collaborating with colleagues Rebecca Carney, Abbie Jones and Lesley-Ann Meir on the musical parody Gay Miserables (still in production)). The logo and costumes are the designs of Hannah Baines, a key collaborator on the project. Despite the fame of the first series on the special interest channel, SepticWhale UK, the show was discontinued after a legal battle with The Man Team (UK), a group of homosexual tiddlywink competitors from North Yorkshire. Many channels offered to continue the show's run of success, but were turned down by the writers, as they felt a loyalty to SepticWhale UK's project managers, Marc Zablotny and Charlotte Aulton. This was also seen to be the best course to take as the Consumer Poll 2009 voted the show to be "confusing and slightly unrealistic." It remains fairly unknown in popular culture, but fans appreciate for its cartoon-like use of over-the-top violence (in which the actors attained some serious - if comical - injuries), its excessive use of rhyme and its distinctive theme tune. Contrary to popular belief, the name M Team is not intended to parody the A-Team, but is a coincidental occurence only realised after the creation of the first pilot episode. Development Writers Geraghty, Maxwell and Barnshaw pitched the series to Zablotny and Aulton as a cross between Batman, Team America, and traditional slapstick, also including fast-paced, witty dialogue and unconventional storylines. The show was also designed to deal with political and social issues of the time through humour. The writers claimed "nobody has fun anymore, so we decided to introduce the best fun ever!"
Initially, The M Team was not expected to become a hit, and indeed, it wasn't. However, the select viewers of SepticWhale UK found the show entertaining and a pleasant diversion from other shows which only conveyed the depression of modern life. Writers were quoted as saying "Ha! Told you so. Ner ner na ner ner!" Characters==Over the course of the first series, the M Team introduced many characters, some of which have become household names in a small village in Guatemala, the main broadcast area of SepticWhale UK. Here is a list of the characters - however minor their appearance - complete with power descriptions. FLANMAN - The leader of this "motley crew" (quote from Rebecca Carney, colleague), FlanMan uses negative reinforcement in the form of Flanning, an ancient martial art perfected by the Monks of PortaFri CabinDay. This is assisted by the fact that FlanMan can produce a limitless amount of flans from his hands, in a range of flavours. However, he does not do strawberry, the reason for which remains that of folklore. His logo is a flan carried by a falcon in FlanMan's signature colour, strawberry blonde. PANMAN - The second in command. PanMan has a very flat face, and pans instead of hands. Although this is useful for attacking enemies, this proved a problem when the character wanted to play Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock. This problem eventually defeated him when challenged by Mastermind Sheldon to "a duel to the death...or till when I get bored." His logo is a frying pan being hit with a lightning bolt in his signature colour, gun-metal grey. BANMAN and DAMNMAN - The world's most formidable duo. These two work as a double act - BanMan has the power to ban any activity, and then DamnMan has the power to damn the act in the name of the Lord, thus making the act blasphemous. They can function seperately, but the result is often disasterous as DamnMan is prone to temper tantrums. WHAM!MAN and DURANDURANMAN - The world's second most formidable duo, having missed out on the first place when they were found to be faking the results. Wham!Man continuously sings hits from the aforementioned 80's band Wham!, and DuranDuranMan has the same ability but uses songs from the 80's band Duran Duran. DuranDuranMan can always be found dancing on the sand with his on/off girlfriend Rio, and claims that if Wham!Man wakes him up before he go-goes again, he will kill him. A testy partnership.
