Formed in 1999,[2] the service was founded to help combat the drug trafficking through the country from Afghanistan, and is one of the most active anti-narcotics bodies operating in Asia.[2][3][4] HistoryIt is estimated that upwards of 20% of Afghanistan's opiates travel through Tajikistan.[5] Between 2000 and 2011, the agency confiscated over 11,000 kilograms of drugs. It cooperates with law enforcement bodies of Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, China, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan.[6] In 2004, the head of the agency, Ghaffor Mirzoyev, was sentenced to life imprisonment for drug trafficking. He was replaced by Lieutenant General Rustam Nazarov.[7] In September 2013, the Russian Federation paid the agency $5 million for letting the Russian military continue using a military base there.[8] Footnotes1. ^https://books.google.com/books?id=7YTanm1K7BkC&pg=PT55&dq=Rustam+Nazarov&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiMosmo4djbAhURXK0KHcXoAfAQ6AEIMzAE#v=onepage&q=Rustam%20Nazarov&f=false {{Tajikistan-gov-stub}}2. ^1 Tajikistan: Drug Control Agency Draws Praise and Criticism | EurasiaNet.org 3. ^IRIN Asia | TAJIKISTAN: Drug control agency makes its mark | Tajikistan | Other 4. ^UN high official says Tajikistan is key to deter drug trafficking from Afghanistan » Breaking News | Wire Update News | News Wires {{webarchive |url=https://web.archive.org/web/20101227001139/http://wireupdate.com/wires/12901/un-high-official-says-tajikistan-is-key-to-deter-drug-trafficking-from-afghanistan/ |date=27 December 2010 }} 5. ^Tajikistan is the first line of defence in stemming Afghan drugs: UNODC Executive Director 6. ^Drug Control Agency marks milestone 7. ^[https://www.state.gov/g/drl/rls/hrrpt/2006/78843.htm Country Report on Human Rights Practices in Tajikistan] 8. ^{{cite-web|url=http://rt.com/politics/russia-base-military-tajikistan-010|title=Agreement on Russian military base submitted to Tajik parliament|publisher=RT}} 4 : Government of Tajikistan|Drugs in Tajikistan|Drug control law enforcement agencies|Law enforcement in Tajikistan |
