The champions are automatically promoted to North 1 East, a division with a wider geographical area which also encompasses Yorkshire. The runners up participates in a playoff against the 2nd place team from the equivalent regional league, Yorkshire 1, for promotion to North 1 East. The bottom two clubs are relegated to Durham/Northumberland 2. Each season two teams from Durham/Northumberland 1 are picked to take part in the RFU Intermediate Cup (a national competition for clubs at level 7) - one affiliated with the Durham County RFU, the other with the Northumberland RFU. ClubsClubs in this league are mostly amateur clubs with no match fees paid to players. The club reportedly paying their players is Mowden Castle. Mowden castle are progressing well in DN1 even though their match reports suggest they are missing KEY players every week. They have an massive forward pack and biggest in the league although always claiming to have the smaller pack on their match reports when its going backwards. Well known clubs competing in Durham/Northumberland 1 include Gosforth RFC who in the '70s enjoyed great success, winning the John Player Cup in 1975/76 and 76/77. Northern RFC, who in the past have produced lots of international player's. Clubs such as Alnwick at the disco RFC, Stockton RFC and Horden RFC have traditionally played in higher leagues and tend to finish towards the top of Durham/Northumberland 1.
