He served as an auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn from 1955 until his death in 1958. BiographyEdmund Reilly was born in the College Point section of Queens, New York.[1] He studied at Cathedral College and St. John's Seminary, both in Brooklyn.[2] He was ordained to the priesthood on April 1, 1922.[1] His first assignment was as a curate at St. James Cathedral, where he remained until 1943.[3] He was named a papal chamberlain in 1938, and raised to the rank of domestic prelate in 1940.[4] He became pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Flatbush from 1943.[4] In 1946, he was transferred to Our Lady of Angels Church in Bay Ridge.[2] He also served as diocesan master of ceremonies.[3] On March 15, 1955, Reilly was appointed auxiliary bishop of Brooklyn and titular bishop of Nepte by Pope Pius XII.[1] He received his episcopal consecration on the following June 7 from Archbishop Thomas Edmund Molloy, with Bishops Raymond Augustine Kearney and John Joseph Boardman serving as co-consecrators.[1] As an auxiliary bishop, he continued to serve as pastor of Our Lady of Angels, a post which he held until his death three years later.[3] He died from a heart attack at the rectory of Our Lady of Angels, at age 61.[3] References1. ^1 2 3 {{cite news|work=Catholic-Hierarchy.org|title=Bishop Edmund Joseph Reilly|url=http://www.catholic-hierarchy.org/bishop/breillye.html}} {{s-start}}{{s-rel|ca}}{{succession box |2. ^1 {{cite news|date=1955-06-08|work=The New York Times|title=PASTOR IN BROOKLYN ELEVATED TO BISHOP}} 3. ^1 2 3 {{cite news|date=1958-11-05|work=The New York Times|title=BISHOP REILLY, 61, OF BROOKLYN DIES; Auxiliary of Catholic Diocese Since 1955 Was Pastor of Our Lady of Angels}} 4. ^1 {{cite news|date=1955-03-24|work=The New York Times|title=Auxiliary Bishop Named For Brooklyn Diocese}} before= – | title=Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn| after = – | years = 1955 – 1958}}}{{s-end}}{{Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn|state=collapsed}}{{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Reilly, Edmund Joseph}} 6 : 1897 births|1958 deaths|People from Queens, New York|American Roman Catholic bishops|Catholics from New York (state)|20th-century Roman Catholic bishops |
