Edward Southwell, 20th Baron de Clifford (6 June 1738 – 1 November 1777) was a British politician.

He was the only son of Edward Southwell (1705–1755) of Kingsweston by his wife Catherine, daughter of Edward Watson, Viscount Sondes[1] and educated at Westminster School and Pembroke College, Cambridge.[2] He inherited the Kings Weston estate near Bristol on the death of his father in 1755.

He was elected to the British House of Commons as Member of Parliament for Bridgwater on 28 March 1761, sitting until 1763.[3] On 23 November 1763 he was returned for Gloucestershire, sitting until 1776.[4] He also represented Kinsale in the Irish House of Commons from May 1761 to 1768.[5]

On 17 April 1776 the abeyance of the Barony of Clifford was terminated in his favour, and he entered the British House of Lords as 20th Baron de Clifford.[1][6] He died one year later.

On 29 August 1765, Edward Southwell had married Sophia Campbell, the daughter of Samuel Campbell of Mount Campbell, Co Leitrim. They had 4 sons and 5 daughters.

Edward's son and heir, also named Edward Southwell (1767–1832), succeeded him as Baron de Clifford, and died unmarried with no issue. His daughter, Catherine Southwell (d. 19 July 1801), married Col. George Kein Hayward Coussmaker (1759 - 1801), and their daughter, Sophia Coussmaker (1791–1874), became the 22nd Baroness de Clifford suo jure, after the death of her uncle.

After her husband's death Lady de Clifford was appointed Governess to Princess Charlotte.[7]
