The marshes are said to be one of the most important wetlands in Europe.[3] They lie at altitude of approximately 240 to 220 m above sea level, and form one of the largest areas of floodplain mire and fen vegetation in Scotland.[4] The marshes cover around 11 km2, and hold a number of conservation designations. 7 km2 of the area is owned and managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), and forms a national nature reserve.[1][3] The RSPB have laid out several waymarked trails, and provided two bird hides to allow visitors to appreciate the area and its birdlife.[5] Flora and faunaThe marshes are dominated by sedge plants, which both string sedge and water sedge being present. It also supports many other flowering plants including least water-lily, awlwort, cowbane and shady horsetail.[6][7] Many rare wetland invertebrates can be found at Insh Marshes, including various species of flies, beetles and moths. It is only site in Britain at which the spider Wabasso replicatus has been identified. Other notable invertebrate species present include the aquatic beetle Donacia aquatica, the fly Tipula marginella, the horse-fly Hybomitra lurida and the snipe-fly Thereva inornata. The birch woodlands above the marshes are home to several moth species, including Rannoch sprawler and Cousin German.[7] In October 2014, a species of insect called Molanna angustata, a type of caddisfly that inhabits Wales and England up to the Lake District and Yorkshire was identified here. Genevieve Dalley, a RSPB Scotland trainee ecologist discovered and identified two males caught in a moth trap at the marshes near Kingussie: the species had not previously been recorded in Scotland.[8] Arctic charr spawn along the River Spey and its side-streams, and the area provides an ideal habitat for otter.[7]The Insh Marshes are most noted for the many species of birds that breed here each summer. Breeding species include osprey, ducks such as wigeon, shoveler and goldeneye, and waders including redshank, snipe, curlew and lapwing. The marshes also receive winter visitors including greylag geese from Iceland and up 200 whooper swans.[7][3] Conservation designationsIn addition to being a national nature reserve (NNR), the marshes hold several other conservation designations. The marshes, together with a stretch of the River Spey, form a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) entitled "River Spey - Insh Marshes", that covers just under 1160 ha.[9] The area of the SSSI is also designated as both a Special Protection Area (SPA) and a Special Area of Conservation under the Natura 2000 programme,[10][11] as well as being a listed site under the Ramsar Convention.[12] The Insh Marshes national nature reserve is classified as a Category IV protected area by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.[13] ReferencesCitations1. ^1 {{cite web|url=https://sitelink.nature.scot/site/8628|title=Site Details for Insh Marshes NNR|publisher=Scottish Natural Heritage|accessdate=2019-02-18}} 2. ^{{Cite web|title=River Spey - Insh Marshes|website=Ramsar Sites Information Service|url=https://rsis.ramsar.org/ris/889|accessdate=25 April 2018}} 3. ^1 2 {{cite web|url=http://www.rspb.org.uk/reserves/guide/i/inshmarshes/index.asp|title=Insh Marshes|author=RSPB|accessdate=2019-02-19}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=https://apps.snh.gov.uk/sitelink-api/v1/sites/1364/documents/3|title=River Spey - Insh Marshes SSSI: Site Management Statement|date=2010-06-29|publisher=Scottish Natural Heritage|accessdate=2019-02-19|page=1}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.rspb.org.uk/globalassets/downloads/documents/reserves/insh-marshes-trail-guide.pdf|title=Finding your way around Insh Marshes National Nature Reserve|publisher=RSPB|accessdate=2019-02-19}} 6. ^River Spey - Insh Marshes SSSI Citation. p. 1. 7. ^1 2 3 River Spey - Insh Marshes SSSI Citation. p. 2. 8. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-29566558|title=Insect found near Kingussie a first for Scotland|publisher=BBC News|date=11 October 2014|accessdate=11 October 2014}} 9. ^{{cite web|url=https://sitelink.nature.scot/site/1364|title=Site Details for River Spey - Insh Marshes SSSI|publisher=Scottish Natural Heritage|accessdate=2019-02-18}} 10. ^{{cite web|url=https://sitelink.nature.scot/site/8571|title=Site Details for River Spey - Insh Marshes SPA|publisher=Scottish Natural Heritage|accessdate=2019-02-18}} 11. ^{{cite web|url=https://sitelink.nature.scot/site/8274|title=Site Details for Insh Marshes SAC|publisher=Scottish Natural Heritage|accessdate=2019-02-18}} 12. ^{{cite web|url=https://sitelink.nature.scot/site/8452|title=Site Details for Insh Marshes RAMSAR|publisher=Scottish Natural Heritage|accessdate=2019-02-18}} 13. ^1 {{cite web|url=https://protectedplanet.net/insh-marshes-national-nature-reserve|title=Insh Marshes in United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland|publisher=Protected Planet|accessdate=2019-02-18}} Bibliography
