Its form is derived from the Cyrillic letter El (Л л) by adding a hook to the bottom of the right leg. El with hook was officially added to the Chukchi alphabet in the late 1980s.[1] The letter was first used in a Chukchi language primer that was published in 1996 ({{lang|ckt|Ԓыгъоравэтԓьэн йиԓыйиԓ}}), replacing the Cyrillic letter {{angbr|Л}} to reduce confusion with the different pronunciation of the Russian letter of the same form. It is also used in the Itelmen and Khanty languages. El with tail (Ӆ ӆ) is the nineteenth letter of the Itelmen language, but in many publications El with hook is used instead of El with tail (for example, in the “Historical and Ethnographic Textbook of the Itelmen Language” (2005) {{Ru-icon}} El with hook is used). El with hook has been in use in the Khanty language since 1990.[2] This letter represents the voiceless alveolar lateral fricative {{IPA|/ɬ/}}, like the pronunciation of {{angbr|ll}} in the Welsh language.
