History The United States recognized the independence of Moldova on December 25, 1991, and opened an embassy in its capital, Chișinău, in March 1992. Former U.S. Ambassadors - Mary Pendleton served as the first United States Ambassador to Moldova from 1992 until 1995.

- Rudolf V. Perina was nominated to be U.S. Ambassador to Moldova on April 27, 1998. Mr. Perina was confirmed by the Senate on June 26 and presented his credentials to the President of Moldova on September 11, 1998.
- Pamela Hyde Smith was sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova on November 2, 2001, in a ceremony led by Secretary of State Colin Powell in Washington, D.C.. Ms. Smith presented her credentials to Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin on November 27, 2001, in Chișinău.
