The current embassy moved to new headquarters in September 2015 in a separate building on the same compound as the United States Embassy Rome.[1] The embassy was previously located on Aventine Hill in the Villa Domiziana in Rome, Italy, which was built as a private residence in 1953. In 1994, the U.S. government acquired the property as the new chancery for embassy.[2] On October 16, 2017, Callista L. Gingrich was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the next Ambassador to the Holy See.[3] The embassy is a part of the "Tri-Mission Community" in Rome, the other two being the Embassy of the United States, Rome and the United States Mission to the U.N. Agencies in Rome. HistoryFormal diplomatic relations with the Holy See were established in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II. The mission works in partnership with the Holy See on global issues including: democracy, peace, and security; trafficking in persons; interreligious dialogue; development and foreign aid; and human rights.[4] This facility became the focus of an unexpected controversy when it was falsely reported on November 27, 2013, that the Embassy would be closed.[5] The embassy was set to be transferred in January 2015 to a larger building adjacent to the U.S. Embassy to Italy for reasons of cost, security, and proximity to the Vatican itself.[6] However, as part of a broader push to cut security for American embassies, Congress blocked the move in 2014.[7] The Embassy of the United States to the Holy See, previously located on Aventine Hill, moved to new headquarters in September 2015 in a separate building on the same compound as the United States Embassy Rome.[8] References1. ^{{cite web | url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rffUIBsJfjc | title=U.S. Embassy to the Holy See New Chancery Inauguration | publisher=United States Embassy to the Holy See | accessdate=2016-01-26}} 2. ^{{cite web |url=http://vatican.usembassy.gov/embassy-info.html |title=Embassy Information |publisher=United States Embassy to the Holy See |accessdate=2013-07-27 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20130804191107/http://vatican.usembassy.gov/embassy-info.html |archivedate=2013-08-04 |df= }} 3. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/callista-gingrich-confirmed-as-us-ambassador-to-the-vatican-29758|title=Callista Gingrich confirmed as US Ambassador to the Vatican|last=|first=|date=|work=Catholic News Agency|accessdate=2017-12-01|archive-url=|archivedate=|dead-url=|publisher=Catholic News Agency}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=https://va.usembassy.gov/our-relationship/policy-history/current-issues/|title=Current Issues|last=|first=|date=|website=|publisher=United States Embassy to the Holy See|archiveurl=|archivedate=|deadurl=|accessdate=2017-12-01|df=}} 5. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/27/jeb-bush-vatican-embassy_n_4352621.html|title=Jeb Bush Perpetuates Myth That Obama Is Closing The Vatican Embassy|work=Huffington Post|date=November 27, 2013|first=Mollie|last=Reilly}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/benghazi-vatican-embassy|title=The right’s logical dilemma over embassy security|work=MSNBC|date=November 30, 2013}} 7. ^{{cite web |url=https://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2014/01/2014-spending-bill-infested-right-wing-pet-rocks |title=The 2014 Spending Bill is Infested With Right-Wing Pet Rocks |last1=Drum |first1=Kevin |date=16 January 2014 |website=www.motherjones.com |publisher=Mother Jones and the Foundation for National Progress |accessdate=17 January 2014}} 8. ^{{cite web | url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rffUIBsJfjc | title=U.S. Embassy to the Holy See New Chancery Inauguration | publisher=United States Embassy to the Holy See | accessdate=2016-01-26}} External links
