There are three subspecies, all of which occur in North America north of Mexico.[1] The subspecies Emesaya b. brevipennis is the most widely distributed and is reported to be bivoltine in Southern Illinois.[2] This subspecies has 5 instars.[2] E. brevipennis has been reported to rob spiders of their prey[3] and to prey upon spiders.[4] The species also will prey upon conspecifics, both in the larval and adult stage.[5]References1. ^{{Cite book|author=Froeschner, Richard C. |year=1988|chapter=Family Reduviidae Latreille, 1807.
