HistoryThe three-storey brick building was designed by the renowned architect Sarkis Balyan and finished in 1875 next to Ortaköy Mosque. It was presented to Esma Sultan, the daughter of Ottoman Sultan Abdulaziz, as a wedding gift. The mansion remained in the possession of the Ottoman dynasty until 1915. The building was subsequently used first as a tobacco warehouse and then as a coal depot from 1920 until 1975, when it was destroyed by a fire.[1] RedevelopmentThe ruin, consisting only of the outer walls of the building, was purchased in the early 1990s by The Marmara hotel chain. Following a renovation with additions designed by architects Haluk Sezgin and Philippe Robert, the mansion was opened in 2001 as a multipurpose event venue. Within the brick exterior, which was left as the original, a steel and glass structure is incorporated. According to the GAD Architecture group, a redesign by the architect Gökhan Avcıoğlu was completed in 2005.[2] The building includes a bar, a restaurant, and an event hall at several levels.[3] The building is situated in a garden of {{convert|2226|abbr=on|m2|ft2}}. The ground floor is {{convert|abbr=on|31.5|m|ft}} wide, {{convert|abbr=on|27|m|ft}} long and {{convert|abbr=on|3.80|m|ft}} high. Space for reception is available for up to 3,000 guests in the garden, 300 guests in the ground floor and 600 guests in the first floor.[5] The venue also hosts concerts of the Istanbul International Jazz Festival[6] and the Istanbul International Music Festival.[7] References{{Commons category}}1. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.themarmarahotels.com/venues/esma-sultan/history.aspx | title=History – Esma Sultan | publisher=Marmara Hotels | accessdate=June 29, 2016}} {{Imperial palaces in Turkey}}2. ^{{Cite web|url = http://www.gadarchitecture.com/gokhan-avcioglu-studio-page-100001|title = GAD Architecture: Studio page, Gökhan Avcıoğlu|date = October 17, 2014|accessdate = October 17, 2014|website = GAD Architecture|publisher = GAD Architecture|last = |first = }} 3. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.archnet.org/library/sites/one-site.jsp?site_id=9789 |publisher=ArchNet |title=Esma Sultan Mansion |accessdate=November 24, 2008 }} 4. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.icvb.org/image/mpg/6SEPERATOR.pdf |publisher=Incentive Venues and Social Programmes |title=The Marmara Esma Sultan |accessdate=November 24, 2008 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20090305203229/http://www.icvb.org/image/mpg/6SEPERATOR.pdf |archivedate=March 5, 2009 |df= }} 5. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.monetatravel.com/incentive/venues.html |publisher=Moneta Travel |title=Venues - Esma Sultan |accessdate=November 24, 2008 }} 6. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.hotelsinistanbul.net/guide.php?q=/view/175 |publisher=Istanbul Tourist |title=Istanbul Jazz Festival |accessdate=November 24, 2008 }} 7. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.observercyprus.com/observer/NewsDetails.aspx?id=1678 |publisher=Cyprus Observer |title=Istanbul Music Festival celebrating 35th year |accessdate=November 24, 2008 }} 9 : Houses completed in 1875|Sarkis Balyan buildings|Ottoman palaces in Istanbul|Redevelopment projects in Istanbul|Restaurants in Istanbul|Music venues in Istanbul|Tobacco buildings|Bosphorus|Beşiktaş |
