She first competed in the sprint events, winning two Olympic medals in the 100 m and 200 m in 1992 whilst representing the Unified Team. Irina Privalova had been a formidable competitor during most of the 1990s but had not yet won an outdoor world championship gold medal. In 2000, she gambled successfully and switched to the 400 m hurdles discipline winning the Olympic title in Sydney 2000 in 53.02 s and a bronze in the 4 x 400 m relay team for Russia. It has been suggested that this change at the late age of 31 was because her chances of defeating Marion Jones (the overwhelming favourite for the 100 m/200 m double) were slim and the 400 m was also a repeat showdown between Marie-José Pérec and Cathy Freeman from the 1996 Atlanta Games. (That repeat showdown would not happen after Pérec left the Sydney games.) Irina Privalova is currently the world indoor record holder in the 50 m (5.96 s), 60 m (6.92 s) sprints. She has also been the world indoor champion at the 60 m (7.02 s in 1991), 200 m (22.15 s in 1993), and 400 m (50.23 s in 1995) events. Privalova achieved her best time (10.77 s) in the 100 m for nine years in 1994.[2] References1. ^1 2 {{cite web|title=Irina Privalova |url=https://www.sports-reference.com/olympics/athletes/pr/irina-privalova-1.html |website=sports-reference.com |publisher=Sports Reference LLC |accessdate=24 September 2014 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20141030133244/http://www.sports-reference.com/olympics/athletes/pr/irina-privalova-1.html |archivedate=30 October 2014 |df= }} 2. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.iaaf.org/athletes/biographies/country=RUS/athcode=62916/index.html |title=IAAF Profile |accessdate=26 July 2008}} {{s-start}}{{s-ach}}{{s-bef|before={{flagicon|GBR}} Sally Gunnell}}{{s-ttl|title=Women's European Athlete of the Year|years=1994}}{{s-aft|after={{flagicon|IRL}} Sonia O'Sullivan}}{{s-sports}}{{s-bef|before={{flagicon|CUB}} Daimí Pernía}}{{s-ttl|title=Women's 400 m Hurdles Best Year Performance|years=2000}}{{s-aft|after={{flagicon|MAR}} Nezha Bidouane}}{{s-end}} {{Footer Olympic Champions 400 m hurdles Women}}{{Footer World Indoor Champions 60m Women}}{{Footer World Indoor Champions 400m Women}}{{Footer European Champions 100 m Women}}{{Footer European Champions 200 m Women}}{{Footer IAAF World Cup Champions 100m Women}}{{Footer IAAF World Cup Champions 400m Women}}{{European Athlete of the Year (women)}}{{Use dmy dates|date=November 2010}}{{Authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Privalova, Irina}} 25 : 1968 births|Living people|People from Lyuberetsky District|Russian female sprinters|Russian female hurdlers|Soviet female sprinters|Athletes (track and field) at the 1992 Summer Olympics|Athletes (track and field) at the 1996 Summer Olympics|Athletes (track and field) at the 2000 Summer Olympics|Olympic athletes of Russia|Olympic athletes of the Unified Team|Olympic gold medalists for Russia|Olympic silver medalists for the Unified Team|Olympic bronze medalists for the Unified Team|Olympic bronze medalists for Russia|World Championships in Athletics medalists|European Athletics Championships medalists|Medalists at the 2000 Summer Olympics|Medalists at the 1992 Summer Olympics|Olympic gold medalists in athletics (track and field)|Olympic silver medalists in athletics (track and field)|Olympic bronze medalists in athletics (track and field)|IAAF world indoor record holders|Goodwill Games medalists in athletics|European Athlete of the Year winners |
