Otets Sergiy) is a 1918 Soviet silent film directed by Yakov Protazanov and Alexandre Volkoff. It is based on the story of the same name by Leo Tolstoy.[1] This was the first film version of the story, the depiction of priests in Russian film not being permitted prior to the 1917 revolution.[1] Ivan Mosjoukine plays the title role.[1] Father Sergius was screened in the United Kingdom in 1920 and 1927.[1]Plot summaryDuring the reign of Russian Tsar Nicholas I. Prince Kasatsky discovers that his fiancée has an affair with the Tsar. He decides to break his engagement and retires to a convent where he tries to reach holiness.[2] ReceptionA review in The Bioscope, from the time of the film's screening in the United Kingdom in 1920, was critical of the technical qualities of the film, but commented on Moskoujine's "remarkable emotional acting", stating that the film's "emotional power and sincerity will be recognised by every spectator".[3] References1. ^1 2 3 {{cite news |title=The Film Society |work=Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer |date=14 February 1927 |accessdate=29 December 2018 |url=https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000687/19270214/155/0008| via = British Newspaper Archive|subscription=yes}} 2. ^Review and synopsis {{cite web |url=http://a-cinema-history.blogspot.com/2014/02/otets-sergiy-father-sergius-1918.html |title=A cinema history|accessdate=25 March 2014}} 3. ^{{cite news |title=Father Sergius |work=The Bioscope |date=11 March 1920 |accessdate=29 December 2018 |url=https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/BL/0002396/19200311/219/0049| via = British Newspaper Archive|subscription=yes}} External links
