Built in 1921 on the former site of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist, is unusual in that it occupies part of the first two stories of a 21-story office building that was originally named the Canadian Pacific Building.[1] The church auditorium seats 1800 people.[2] HistoryOrganized in 1901, Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist, met first at 228 West 45th Street in the former building of another Episcopal church, the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin.[3] Around 1911 the congregation moved to a church building at 245 Madison Avenue at East 38th Street which had been built for Zion Episcopal Church and later used by South (Dutch) Reformed Church.[4][5] This building was razed in 1917.[6] In 1921, Fifth Church became part of a bonding arrangement for the construction of the 21-story Canadian Pacific Building. Under it the church received a long-term lease for the space it still occupies.[7] Current statusFifth Church of Christ, Scientist, is still an active congregation in this location.[8] The Canadian Pacific Building after being known as 342 Madison Avenue for years is now 340 Madison Avenue and has been extensively remodeled to present a modern glass exterior.[9][10] References1. ^{{cite news | title = Canadian Pacific Building | work = New York Times | date = 1921-02-02 | url = https://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9A00E5DC1631EF33A25751C0A9649C946095D6CF | accessdate = 2009-09-05}} 2. ^Ivey, Paul Eli, Prayers in Stone: Christian Science Architecture in the United States, 1894-1930, Urbana and Chicago: University of Illinois Press, 1999, pp. 20-21, {{ISBN|0-252-02445-1}} 3. ^New York City Organ Project / Manhattan / Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist 4. ^New York City Organ Project / Manhattan / Church of Zion and St. Timothy 5. ^New York City Organ Project / Manhattan / South Dutch Reformed Church 6. ^Fifth Church of Christ Scientist, Madison Avenue and 38th Street, southeast corner, 1915 7. ^Ivey, Paul Eli, Prayers in Stone: Christian Science Architecture in the United States, 1894-1930, Urbana and Chicago: University of Illinois Press, 1999, pp. 20-21, {{ISBN|0-252-02445-1}} 8. ^Christian Science churches in Manhattan 9. ^{{cite news | last = Holusha | first = John | title = A New Face on Madison Avenue | work = New York Times | date = 2005-10-26 | url = https://www.nytimes.com/2005/10/26/realestate/26madison.html | accessdate = 2009-09-05}} 10. ^Emporis listing for 340 Madison Avenue External links
