The group lies in Dease Strait, approximately {{convert|12|mi|abbr=on}} from Cape Alexander, south of Victoria Island and north of the mainland's Kent Peninsula.[1] The community of Cambridge Bay is approximately {{convert|23|mi|abbr=on}} to the east.[2] An early survey was made by Sir Richard Collinson on board the Enterprise during his search for Sir John Franklin's lost expedition. Collinson noted the islands to be a basalt ridge running south/southeast. The largest measures {{convert|2|sqmi|abbr=on|2}} long by {{convert|.75|sqmi|abbr=on|2}} wide.[3] Colonies of Thayer's gull and glaucous gull are located on one of the larger islands.[4] References1. ^{{cite web |url=http://atlas.nrcan.gc.ca/site/english/maps/topo/map?mapsize=428%20380&lat=69.0833000003&long=-105.9667&mapxy=-423437.243024+2222638.5573&scale=5000000&feature_na=Finlayson+Islands&location1=62&unique_key=0c73e4b6849c20c32c84d2085bbdefb7&searchstring=lands&entity=ISL&layers=fapfeature+fapfeature%20north_arrow%20other_features%20million_grid%20t50k_grid%20grid_50k_3%20roads%20hydrography%20boundary%20builtup%20vegetation%20populated_places%20railway%20power_network%20manmade_features%20designated_areas%20water_features%20water_saturated_soils%20relief%20contours%20toponymy%20contour%20nodata_ntdb_50k&urlappend=%26unique_key%3D0c73e4b6849c20c32c84d2085bbdefb7%26map.layer%5Btextzoom03%5D%3DFEATURE+POINTS+-423265.915447+2223635.02857+END+TEXT+%22Finlayson%2BIslands%22+END%26map.layer%5Btextzoom46%5D%3DFEATURE+POINTS+-423265.915447+2223635.02857+END+TEXT+%22Finlayson%2BIslands%22+END%26map.layer%5Bpolygonresultzoom0%5D%3DDATA+fap_islands%26map.layer%5Bpolygonresultzoom1%5D%3DDATA+fap_islands%26map.layer%5Bpolygonresultzoom2%5D%3DDATA+fap_islands%26map.layer%5Bpolygonresultzoom0outline%5D%3DDATA+fap_islands%26map.layer%5Bpolygonresultzoom1outline%5D%3DDATA+fap_islands%26map.layer%5Bpolygonresultzoom2outline%5D%3DDATA+fap_islands%26map.layer%5Barrowzoom03%5D%3DFEATURE+POINTS+-423265.915447+2223635.02857+END+END |title=Information on "Finlayson Islands" |accessdate=2008-05-26 |publisher=Atlas of Canada}} {{Arctic Cordillera}}{{Islands of the Kitikmeot Region}}{{KitikmeotNU-geo-stub}}2. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.northabout.com/nwp/NWP11-12.htm |title=Northwest Passage Expedition |accessdate=2008-05-26 |publisher=northabout.com}} 3. ^{{cite book |pages=286–288 |url= https://books.google.com/books?id=zrR5LmfV6YUC&pg=PA258|title=Journal of H.M.S.
