{{for|the most current Championships|2017 Beach Volleyball World Championships}}{{refimprove|date=January 2017}}The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships is the double-gender world championship for the sport of beach volleyball organized by the {{lang|fr|Fédération Internationale de Volleyball}} (FIVB) the sport's global governing body. The first official edition of the event was held in Los Angeles, United States in 1997 and tournaments had been awarded every two years since then. Before 1997, ten unofficial championships not organized by the FIVB were all held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil between 1987 and 1996. The most recent World Championships took place in Vienna, Austria in 2017. Winning the World Championships is considered to be one of the highest honours in international beach volleyball, surpassing the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour and being surpassed only by the Beach Volleyball tournament at the Summer Olympic Games. FormatThe tournament has a 48-team main draw per gender and consists of two stages: the group stage followed by the knockout stage. The prize pool for each gender is US$500,000.[1] Results summaryMen's tournamentTournament | Champions | Runners-up | Third place | Fourth place | 1997 Beach Volleyball World Championship {{flagicon|USA}} Los Angeles, United States details | Rogério Ferreira|BRA}} {{flagathlete|Guilherme Marques|BRA}} 5–12, 12–8, 12–10 | Canyon Ceman|USA}} {{flagathlete|Mike Whitmarsh|USA}} | Dain Blanton|USA}} {{flagathlete|Kent Steffes|USA}} {{efn-ua|No third place match was played in 1997; losing semi-finalists are listed in alphabetical order.}} | Paulão Moreira|BRA}} {{flagathlete|Paulo Emilio Silva|BRA}} | 1999 Beach Volleyball World Championship {{flagicon|FRA}} Marseille, France details | José Loiola|BRA}} {{flagathlete|Emanuel Rego|BRA}} 15–8 | Martin Laciga|SUI}} {{flagathlete|Paul Laciga|SUI}} | Rogério Ferreira|BRA}} {{flagathlete|Guilherme Marques|BRA}} 15–7 | Javier Bosma|ESP}} {{flagathlete|Fabio Díez|ESP}} | 2001 Beach Volleyball World Championship {{flagicon|AUT}} Klagenfurt, Austria details | Mariano Baracetti|ARG}} {{flagathlete|Martín Conde|ARG}} 25–23, 12–21, 20–18 | José Loiola|BRA}} {{flagathlete|Ricardo Santos|BRA}} | Vegard Høidalen|NOR}} {{flagathlete|Jørre Kjemperud|NOR}} 21–16, 21–14 | Rob Heidger|USA}} {{flagathlete|Chip McCaw|USA}} | 2003 Beach Volleyball World Championship {{flagicon|BRA}} Rio de Janeiro, Brazil details | Emanuel Rego|BRA}} {{flagathlete|Ricardo Santos|BRA}} 21–18, 21–15 | Dax Holdren|USA}} {{flagathlete|Stein Metzger|USA}} | Márcio Araújo|BRA}} {{flagathlete|Benjamin Insfran|BRA}} Walkover | João Brenha|POR}} {{flagathlete|Miguel Maia|POR}} | 2005 Beach Volleyball World Championship {{flagicon|GER}} Berlin, Germany details | Márcio Araújo|BRA}} {{flagathlete|Fábio Luiz Magalhães|BRA}} 22–20, 21–12 | Sascha Heyer|SUI}} {{flagathlete|Paul Laciga|SUI}} | Julius Brink|GER}} {{flagathlete|Kjell Schneider|GER}} 16–21, 21–17, 15–10 | Marvin Polte|GER}} {{flagathlete|Thorsten Schön|GER}} | 2007 Beach Volleyball World Championship {{flagicon|SUI}} Gstaad, Switzerland details | Phil Dalhausser|USA}} {{flagathlete|Todd Rogers|USA}} 21–16, 21–14 | Dmitri Barsuk|RUS}} {{flagathlete|Igor Kolodinsky|RUS}} | Andrew Schacht|AUS}} {{flagathlete|Joshua Slack|AUS}} 21–17, 21–19 | Emanuel Rego|BRA}} {{flagathlete|Ricardo Santos|BRA}} | 2009 Beach Volleyball World Championship {{flagicon|NOR}} Stavanger, Norway details | Julius Brink|GER}} {{flagathlete|Jonas Reckermann|GER}} 21–16, 21–19 | Alison Cerutti|BRA}} {{flagathlete|Harley Marques Silva|BRA}} | Phil Dalhausser|USA}} {{flagathlete|Todd Rogers|USA}} 21–11, 21–16 | David Klemperer|GER}} {{flagathlete|Eric Koreng|GER}} | 2011 Beach Volleyball World Championship {{flagicon|ITA}} Rome, Italy details | Alison Cerutti|BRA}} {{flagathlete|Emanuel Rego|BRA}} 21–16, 21–15 | Márcio Araújo|BRA}} {{flagathlete|Ricardo Santos|BRA}} | Julius Brink|GER}} {{flagathlete|Jonas Reckermann|GER}} 22–20, 18–21, 15–11 | Mārtiņš Pļaviņš|LAT}} {{flagathlete|Jānis Šmēdiņš|LAT}} | 2013 Beach Volleyball World Championship {{flagicon|POL}} Stare Jabłonki, Poland details | Alexander Brouwer|NED}} {{flagathlete|Robert Meeuwsen|NED}} 21–18, 21–16 | Álvaro Morais Filho|BRA}} {{flagathlete|Ricardo Santos|BRA}} | Jonathan Erdmann|GER}} {{flagathlete|Kay Matysik|GER}} 21–17, 21–19 | Alison Cerutti|BRA}} {{flagathlete|Emanuel Rego|BRA}} | 2015 Beach Volleyball World Championship {{flagicon|NED}} Netherlands details | Alison Cerutti|BRA}} {{flagathlete|Bruno Oscar Schmidt|BRA}} 12–21, 21–14, 22–20 | Reinder Nummerdor|NED}} {{flagathlete|Christiaan Varenhorst|NED}} | Evandro Oliveira|BRA}} {{flagathlete|Pedro Solberg Salgado|BRA}} 22–20, 21–13 | Theo Brunner|USA}} {{flagathlete|Nick Lucena|USA}} | 2017 Beach Volleyball World Championship {{flagicon|AUT}} Vienna, Austria details | Evandro Oliveira|BRA}} {{flagathlete|André Stein|BRA}} 23–21, 22–20 | Clemens Doppler|AUT}} {{flagathlete|Alexander Horst|AUT}} | Viacheslav Krasilnikov|RUS}} {{flagathlete|Nikita Liamin|RUS}} 21–17, 21–17 | Maarten van Garderen|NED}} {{flagathlete|Christiaan Varenhorst|NED}} | 2019 Beach Volleyball World Championship {{flagicon|GER}} Hamburg, Germany details |
