The football tournament at the 1979 Southeast Asian Games was held from 22 to 30 September in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Teams

Brunei and the Philippines did not participate in the football tournament. Kampuchea (then name for Cambodia), Laos and Vietnam did not participate at the Southeast Asian Games all together.

Tournament

The competition is played in a group format with only five participating teams. The group winner advances to the gold medal match with the second and third placed teams going into a play-off for the right to play in the gold medal match.
