Fort Tonoloway was a frontier fort built in 1755 by Lt. Thomas Stoddert and men from the Maryland State Militia.[3] The fort was also known as Stoddert's Fort. It was abandoned in 1756 when Fort Frederick was constructed.[4][5]The state park was at one time leased to the Boy Scouts. It is awaiting archaeological investigation before its use as a recreational facility can be assessed.[6] References1. ^{{cite web|title=Fort Tonoloway State Park|url=https://www.protectedplanet.net/fort-tonoloway-state-park|website=Protected Planet|publisher=IUCN|accessdate=1 May 2018}} 2. ^1 {{cite web |url=http://mht.maryland.gov/historicalmarkers/Details.aspx?id=RM-742&recNum=39&county=Washington%20County |title=Tonoloway Fort |work=Maryland's Roadside Historical Markers |publisher=Maryland Historical Trust |accessdate=December 6, 2013}} 3. ^1 {{cite web |url=https://www.canaltrust.org/pyv/fort-stoddert-on-the-tonoloways/ |title=Fort Stoddert on the Tonoloways |publisher=C&O Canal Trust |accessdate=November 3, 2017}} 4. ^1 {{cite book |title=The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal |first=Mary H. |last=Rubin |series=Images of America |publisher=Arcadia Publishing |date=2003 |page=96 |isbn=9780738515984}} 5. ^1 {{cite web |url=http://dlslibrary.state.md.us/publications/JCR/2009/2009_22a-2.pdf |title=Maryland Land Preservation, Parks & Recreation Plan 2009 |publisher=Maryland Department of Natural Resources |page=59 |accessdate=December 6, 2013}}
