FUO was re-opened to serve as a relief airport for the region. Along with two other major airports, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport, it serves the catchment area of the Pearl River Delta Economic Zone.[3] HistoryShadi Air Base is an airbase of People's Liberation Army Air Force. A squadron of J8-2 fighters are in support of the PLA Hong Kong Garrison.{{citation needed|date=November 2011}} Commercial flights started in 1987, but ceased in 2002 due to government policy.
