Heath was born in 1865 in Smethwick, which was then in Staffordshire.[1] He began his football career with Bearwood White Star, Bearwood and Cookham before joining Small Heath in 1889 for a fee of £1.[2] He made his debut on 7 September 1889, the opening day of the inaugural season of the Football Alliance, in a 3–2 home win against local rivals Birmingham St George's, playing at inside left.
