He served as the first head football coach at the Territorial Normal School, renamed Tempe Normal School in 1903 and now known as Arizona State University, coaching from 1896 to 1906 and compiling a record of 12–8. Territorial Normal did not field a football team in 1897, 1898, or 1901. Irish was also the first athletic director at Territorial/Tempe Normal, serving from 1896 to 1913. In addition, he taught science at the school. Irish Field one of the original homes of Arizona State Football was also named after the coach and administrator.[2] Irish graduated from the University of Iowa in 1895 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He taught in his hometown of Dubuque, Iowa, before moving to Arizona.[3] Irish died in 1941.[4] Irish Hall, a residence hall at Arizona State University, is named for him.[5] Head coaching record{{CFB Yearly Record Start | type = coach | team = | conf = | bowl = | poll = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Subhead| name = Territorial/Tempe Normal Owls | conf = Independent | startyear = 1896 | endyear = 1906 }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1896 | name = Territorial Normal | overall = 0–1 | conference = | confstanding = | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | bcsbowl = | ranking = no | ranking2 = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1897 | name = No team | overall = | conference = | confstanding = | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | bcsbowl = | ranking = no | ranking2 = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1898 | name = No team | overall = | conference = | confstanding = | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | bcsbowl = | ranking = no | ranking2 = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1899 | name = Territorial Normal | overall = 3–0 | conference = | confstanding = | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | bcsbowl = | ranking = no | ranking2 = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1900 | name = Territorial Normal | overall = 1–1 | conference = | confstanding = | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | bcsbowl = | ranking = no | ranking2 = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1901 | name = No team | overall = | conference = | confstanding = | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | bcsbowl = | ranking = no | ranking2 = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1902 | name = Territorial Normal | overall = 2–1 | conference = | confstanding = | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | bcsbowl = | ranking = no | ranking2 = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1903 | name = Tempe Normal | overall = 2–0 | conference = | confstanding = | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | bcsbowl = | ranking = no | ranking2 = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1904 | name = Tempe Normal | overall = 4–0 | conference = | confstanding = | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | bcsbowl = | ranking = no | ranking2 = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1905 | name = Tempe Normal | overall = 0–3 | conference = | confstanding = | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | bcsbowl = | ranking = no | ranking2 = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1906 | name = Tempe Normal | overall = 0–2 | conference = | confstanding = | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | bcsbowl = | ranking = no | ranking2 = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Subtotal | name = Tempe Normal | overall = 12–8 | confrecord = }}{{CFB Yearly Record End | overall = 12–8 | bowls = no | poll = no | polltype = | legend = no }} References1. ^ {{Arizona State Sun Devils athletic director navbox}}{{Arizona State Sun Devils football coach navbox}}{{Authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Irish, Frederick M.}}{{1890s-collegefootball-coach-stub}}2. ^{{cite web|title=100 Day Sun Devil Football Countdown To Kickoff, #59: The First Homes Of ASU Football|url=http://www.houseofsparky.com/2012/7/2/3131159/asu-football-stadiums-history|publisher=House of Sparky|author=Brad Denny|accessdate=July 16, 2015}} 3. ^{{cite web |url=http://users.iab.uaf.edu/~stefanie_bond/Publications_files/Ickert-Bond_Pinkava_Sida2001.pdf |title=VASCULAR PLANT TYPES IN THE ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY HERBARIUM |last1=Ickert-Bond |first1=Stefanie M. |last2=Pinkava |first2=Donald J |date= |work= |publisher=University of Alaska |accessdate=April 3, 2011}} 4. ^{{cite book |title=Maroon & Gold: A History of Sun Devil Athletics |last=Eger |first=Bob |authorlink= |coauthors= |year=2001 |publisher=Sports Publishing LLC |location= |isbn=1-58261-223-4 |page=5 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=4IX5ac_Q_lQC&pg=PA5 |accessdate=April 3, 2011}} 5. ^{{cite web |url=https://tours.asu.edu/tempe/irish-hall |title=ASU Tempe Campus Tour: Irish Hall |author= |date= |work= |publisher=Arizona State University |accessdate=April 3, 2011}} 7 : 1870 births|1941 deaths|Arizona State Sun Devils athletic directors|Arizona State Sun Devils football coaches|Arizona State University faculty|University of Iowa alumni|Sportspeople from Dubuque, Iowa |
