Sir Frederick Joseph Wall (14 April 1858 – 25 March 1944) was an English football administrator. CareerWall became Secretary of the Football Association, a position he held from 1895 to 1934. He was knighted in the 1930 New Year's Honours.[1] Notably, Wall refused on behalf of the FA to offer wartime financial compensation to famed Anglo-Irish coach Jimmy Hogan, on the basis of the latter's perceived co-operation with the Central Powers during the First World War (Hogan had coached Hungarian side MTK Budapest whilst interned as an enemy alien during the conflict).[2] After retiring as FA Secretary, he was a director of Arsenal from 1934 to 1938.[3] Wall credited the Royal Engineers with being the first side to play the modern passing football style known as the Combination Game.[4][5] He credited the Corinthians with bringing about the later developments in the passing game.[6] References1. ^{{London Gazette |issue=33587|page=1574|date= 11 March 1930 }} {{The Football Association}}2. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.theguardian.com/football/2003/nov/22/sport.comment2|title=How total football inventor was lost to Hungary|accessdate=5 May 2008|date=22 November 2003|publisher=The Guardian}} 3. ^{{cite web | url=http://homepage.ntlworld.com/andy.kelly/nonplay/nonplay.htm | title=Arsenal non-players | archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20021214232629/http://homepage.ntlworld.com/andy.kelly/nonplay/nonplay.htm | archivedate=14 December 2002 }} 4. ^{{cite book |last= Wall|first= Sir Frederick|authorlink= |title= 50 Years of Football, 1884-1934|year= 2005|publisher= Soccer Books Limited|location= |isbn= 1-86223-116-8}} 5. ^Cox, Richard (2002) The encyclopaedia of British Football, Routledge, United Kingdom 6. ^50 Years of football 1884-1934, originally published 1935; reprint 2006 by Soccer books limited, page 10 External links
