The peak is on the boundary between El Dorado County and Alpine County; and the boundary between the Eldorado National Forest and the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.[3] At {{convert|10886|ft|m|0}} it is the tallest summit in the Carson Range, El Dorado County and the Tahoe Basin.[2] Due to its elevation, most of the precipitation that falls on the mountain is snow.[4] In 1893, the U.S. Geological Survey assigned the name Freel Peak to what was then known as Jobs Peak. James Freel was an early settler in the area.[5][6] References1. ^1 {{cite ngs |id=JR1221 |name=Freel Peak |accessdate=2009-01-21}} {{AlpineCountyCA-geo-stub}}{{ElDoradoCountyCA-geo-stub}}2. ^1 {{cite peakbagger |pid=2574 |name=Freel Peak, California |accessdate=2009-02-25}} 3. ^ {{cite map | publisher = USGS | title = Freel Peak quadrangle, California | url = http://www.topoquest.com/map.php?lat=38.857537042&lon=-119.900142906&datum=nad83&zoom=8&&size=l | scale = 1:24000 | series = 7.5 Minute Topographic | accessdate = 2009-12-23 }} 4. ^ {{cite web | title = Subsection M261Et - Carson Range | url = http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/projects/ecoregions/m261et.htm | archiveurl = https://web.archive.org/web/20070813040005/http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/projects/ecoregions/m261et.htm | archivedate = 2007-08-13 | accessdate = 2014-02-22 | publisher = U.S. Forest Service}} 5. ^{{cite book |last=Gudde |first=Erwin G. |title=California Place Names |year=1949 |location=Berkeley |publisher=Univ. of California Press |page=121 }} 6. ^{{cite gnis |id=260360 |name=Freel Peak |accessdate=2012-12-17}} 7 : Mountains of the Sierra Nevada (U.S.)|Mountains of El Dorado County, California|Mountains of Alpine County, California|Eldorado National Forest|Humboldt–Toiyabe National Forest|Mountains of Northern California|North American 3000 m summits |
