}}Froma Harrop (born March 18, 1950 in New York City) is an American writer and author. Though generally liberal / left-of-center, she is known for her unconventional approach and libertarian streak. The Heartland Institute, a conservative and libertarian public policy think tank, has called her its "favorite lefty."[1]

She is best known for her bi-weekly syndicated column which appears in about 200 news outlets including the Seattle Times, Newsday, Denver Post, Arizona Republic, Detroit News, Omaha World-Herald, San Antonio Express-News, Real Clear Politics and The Providence Journal. She is represented by Creators Syndicate Inc. in Los Angeles.

Media Matters ranks her column 20th nationally in total readership and 14th in large newspaper concentration.

Early life

Born in New York City, Harrop was raised in suburban Long Island.[2] After graduating from New York University, she worked on the financial desk at Reuters, covering business and the Federal Reserve.[3]

Recent career

Harrop later became a business editor for The New York Times News Service.[4] She returned to her reporting roots as a business writer for the Providence Journal in Rhode Island and subsequently joined the Journal’s editorial board, where she was a member until 2013.[5] Harrop currently resides in Providence and New York City.

Harrop has been a guest on PBS, Fox News, MSNBC, NPR and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

Harrop has written for The New York Times, Harper’s Bazaar, and Institutional Investor. She is also a contributor to The Progressive Populist. Her columns have been published in several book anthologies.

Harrop is a past president of the Association of Opinion Journalists, formerly known as the National Conference of Editorial Writers.[6][7]
