However, she is the widow of Abdul Rahman, the assassinated Afghan Aviation Minister. Fana is an Orthopaedic surgeon.[9] Fana was criticized for using campaign posters that had her picture on it.[4] One other woman was a candidate for President in 2009, Shahla Atta.[9] She was already a member of the Wolesi Jirga, Afghanistan's National Legislature. After Massouda Jalal came sixth out of eighteen presidential candidates in 2004 then President Hamid Karzai appointed her Afghan Women's Affairs Minister. According to Rosie DiManno, writing in the Toronto Star, Fana had difficulty campaigning due to her gender.[6] Fana described being ignored by security officials, when asked for security details when she scheduled public meetings, so much of her campaign revolved around inviting guests to her home. DiManno described Fana's concerns that her husband had been murdered by elements within Karzai's administration, who saw him as a potential candidate for president.[6] DiManno quoted Fana on the difficulties Fana enoountered acting as high-profile woman who could serve as a role-model to other women:[6] "These men don't even want me to practise as a doctor. There is so much risk for women, so much violence against them in their own homes. Who cares? Not the men in power. They do nothing. Preliminary voting results placed Fana eighth in a field of thirty-two.[11] The 8,159 votes for Fana represented less than 0.5% of the total votes cast.[11] References1. ^{{cite web |url=http://pajhwokelections.af/contender_biography.php?id=109 |title=Contender Biographies - Pajhwok Exclusive Elections Website |publisher=Pajhwokelections.af |date= |accessdate=2014-04-12 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140413143851/http://pajhwokelections.af/contender_biography.php?id=109 |archive-date=2014-04-13 |dead-url=yes |df= }} 2. ^{{cite news |url = http://www.presstv.ir/detail.aspx?id=94888§ionid=351020403 |title = Woman president for Afghanistan? |date = 2009-05-16 |publisher = Press TV |archiveurl = https://web.archive.org/web/20090616190805/http://www.presstv.ir/detail.aspx?id=94888§ionid=351020403 |archivedate = 2009-06-16 |deadurl = yes |df = }} 3. ^{{cite news |url = http://zeldalily.com/index.php/category/frozan-fana/ |title = Two Female Candidates For Afghan Presidency |date = 2009-08-10 |publisher = Zelda Lily |archiveurl = https://web.archive.org/web/20111007201215/http://zeldalily.com/index.php/category/frozan-fana/ |archivedate = 2011-10-07 |deadurl = yes |df = }} 4. ^1 {{cite news| url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/8198126.stm| title=Afghan women strive to be heard| date=2009-08-13| author=Zarghuna Kargar | publisher=BBC News| accessdate=2009-08-30}} 5. ^{{cite news |url = http://www.internews.org/prs/2009/20090513_afghan.shtm |title = A Woman’s Place Is in the Council Chambers: Radio Programming Inspires Afghan Women to Run for Office |date = 2009-05-13 |publisher = Internews |archiveurl = https://web.archive.org/web/20090519121924/http://www.internews.org/prs/2009/20090513_afghan.shtm |archivedate = 2009-05-19 |deadurl = yes |df = }} 6. ^1 2 3 {{cite news |url = https://www.thestar.com/news/world/article/681650 |title = Taking on Afghanistan's patriarchy: Two women seeking presidency subjected to smears and hostility in fight for reform |date = 2009-08-15 |author = Rosie Dimanno |publisher = Toronto Star |archiveurl = https://web.archive.org/web/20090816173547/http://www.thestar.com/news/world/article/681650 |archivedate = 2009-08-16 |deadurl = yes |df = }} 7. ^{{cite news |url = https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=111349105 |title = Candidates' Stories Reflect Afghanistan's Struggle |date = 2009-07-30 |author = |publisher = National Public Radio |archiveurl = https://web.archive.org/web/20091009121428/http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=111349105 |archivedate = 2009-10-09 |accessdate = 2009-08-02 |deadurl = yes |df = }} 8. ^{{cite news |url = https://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5i-UmwryIsQh6f1HpnLsKuCBbG7xgD99SS3U80 |title = 2 women vie for Afghan presidency |date = 2009-08-05 |agency = Associated Press |df = }}{{dead link|date=December 2017|bot=medic}}{{cbignore|bot=medic}} 9. ^1 2 {{cite news| url=http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/08/05/shahla-atta-frozan-fana-2_n_252001.html| title=Shahla Atta, Frozan Fana: 2 Women Among Those Vying For Afghan Presidency| date=2009-05-08| author=Heidi Vogt| publisher=Huffington Post| archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20090909135229/http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/08/05/shahla-atta-frozan-fana-2_n_252001.html| archivedate=2009-09-09}} 10. ^{{cite news |url = https://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5gJqqwsD5Y0A7kZPyMt0eXKx3RpVw |title = Madam President in Afghanistan? |date = 2009-05-15 |publisher = Agence France Presse |archiveurl = https://web.archive.org/web/20100417124620/http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5gJqqwsD5Y0A7kZPyMt0eXKx3RpVw |archivedate = 2010-04-17 |deadurl = yes |df = }} 11. ^1 {{cite news |url = http://www.sabawoon.com/index.php?page=afghanelection |title = Preliminary Result of Afghanistan Presidential Contest |date = 2009-08-20 |author = |publisher = Sabawoon online |archiveurl = https://web.archive.org/web/20090803012110/http://www.sabawoon.com/index.php?page=afghanelection |archivedate = 2009-08-03 |deadurl = yes |df = }} External links
