It was originally recorded by his band, Dyke & the Blazers, in 1967, and was made into a hit by Wilson Pickett that same year. The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart and number eight on its Hot 100 chart.[1] The song is notable as being the first charted single with the word "Funky" in the title as well as being prototypical funk music itself. The "Broadway" referred to in the title of the original Dyke and the Blazers song is Broadway in Buffalo, New York as well as Broadway Road in Phoenix, Arizona.
