The General Aircraft ST-18 Croydon was a 1930s British cabin monoplane built by General Aircraft Limited. DevelopmentFollowing the mixed success of the earlier Monospar family of aircraft, the company designed a ten-seat light transport, the ST-18 (later named Croydon). Due to the longer-span wing, it was not a cantilever monospar wing but had to be fitted with bracing struts. The ST-18 was a low-wing monoplane, with a conventional tail unit and tailwheel landing gear, and hydraulically retractable main gear. It was powered by two Pratt & Whitney Wasp Junior radial engines mounted on the wing leading edges. It had a crew of three, and a cabin for ten passengers, a toilet and baggage compartment.[1] Operational historyOn 16 November 1935, the sole aircraft (T22, later G-AECB) first flew at Hanworth Aerodrome, piloted by Harry M. Schofield. It performed well, but did not attract any orders, so the aircraft was prepared to establish a record for an Australia to England flight. On 30 July 1936, Lord Sempill, Harold "Tim" Wood, and two other crew left Croydon Airport for Australia. On 7 October 1936, during the return flight from Darwin, navigation errors occurred during the flight over the Timor Sea, and the aircraft made a successful forced landing on a coral reef (Seringapatam Reef). The crew members were immediately transported off the reef by local fishermen, and the aircraft was abandoned.[1][2] Specifications{{aerospecs|ref=The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Aircraft (Part Work 1982-1985), 1985, Orbis Publishing, Page 1938 |met or eng?=eng |crew=3 (pilot, co-pilot and wireless operator) |capacity=10 passengers |length m=13.18 |length ft=43 |length in=3 |span m=18.14 |span ft=59 |span in=6 |swept m= |swept ft= |swept in= |rot number= |rot dia m= |rot dia ft= |rot dia in= |dia m= |dia ft= |dia in= |width m= |width ft= |width in= |height m=4.09 |height ft=13 |height in=15 |wing area sqm=42.18 |wing area sqft=454 |swept area sqm= |swept area sqft= |rot area sqm= |rot area sqft= |volume m3= |volume ft3= |aspect ratio= |empty weight kg=3639 |empty weight lb=8000 |gross weight kg=5148 |gross weight lb=11,350 |lift kg= |lift lb= |eng1 number=2 |eng1 type=Pratt & Whitney R-985 Wasp Junior SB 9-cylinder radial piston engine |eng1 kw=336 |eng1 hp=450 |eng1 kn= |eng1 lbf= |eng1 kn-ab= |eng1 lbf-ab= |eng2 number= |eng2 type= |eng2 kw= |eng2 hp= |eng2 kn= |eng2 lbf= |eng2 kn-ab= |eng2 lbf-ab= |max speed kmh=327 |max speed mph=203 |max speed mach= |cruise speed kmh= |cruise speed mph= |range km=1448 |range miles=900 |endurance h= |endurance min= |ceiling m=5945 |ceiling ft=19,500 |glide ratio= |climb rate ms= |climb rate ftmin= |sink rate ms= |sink rate ftmin= |armament1= |armament2= |armament3= |armament4= |armament5= |armament6= }}{{aircontent |see also= |related= |similar aircraft= |sequence= |lists= }} Notes1. ^1 Jackson (1974), p. 310 2. ^Flight 10 December 1936 References{{commons category|General Aircraft Limited}}
