George Armitage Chase MC (3 September[1] 1886 – 30 November 1971[2]) was Bishop of Ripon and Master of Selwyn College, Cambridge. He served as an army chaplain in the first world war and was decorated with the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry in helping the wounded at Ypres on 4 October 1917.[3] The son of Frederic Henry Chase,[4] George Chase was educated at Rugby School[5] and Queens' College, Cambridge, graduating in 1908.[6] Chase subsequently became a Fellow, Dean and Honorary Fellow of Trinity Hall, Cambridge and Canon of Ely. In 1934 he was appointed as the seventh Master of Selwyn College, Cambridge, a position he held until 1946. On retiring from the Mastership, Chase was made an Honorary Fellow of Queens' College, which he remained for the remaining 25 years of his life.[4] On leaving Selwyn, Chase took up the position of Bishop of Ripon, being consecrated on 1 November 1946, where he remained until his resignation on 6 April 1959.[2] He was awarded an honorary DD degree by Leeds University in 1951.[7] Publications
