释义 |
George Herbert Westcott was born into a very distinguished clerical family: his father Brooke Westcott was Bishop of Durham from 1890 until 1901, and his brother Foss Westcott would be Bishop of Calcutta and Metropolitan of India from 1919 until 1945. He was educated at Marlborough College and Peterhouse, Cambridge.[2] He was ordained in 1886 and, after a brief period as Chaplain at his old school, emigrated to India where he worked as a missionary with the SPG. From 1898 he was Examining Chaplain to the inaugural Bishop of Lucknow [3] whom in time he succeeded.[4] He died in post on 16 January 1928, his Times obituary noting his "missionary zeal to secure the self government of the Indian Church."[5] Notes1. ^Who was Who 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 {{ISBN|0-7136-3457-X}} {{S-start}}{{S-rel|en}}{{S-bef|before=Alfred Clifford}}{{S-ttl|title=Bishop of Lucknow|years=1910 – 1928}}{{S-aft|after=Charles John Godfrey Saunders}}{{End}}{{Anglican Bishops of Lucknow}}{{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Westcott, George Herbert}}{{Anglican-bishop-stub}}{{UK-reli-bio-stub}}{{Christianity-bio-stub}}2. ^{{acad|id=WSTT882GH|name=Westcott, George Herbert}} 3. ^The Times, Thursday, 20 April 1893; pg. 12; Issue 33930; col C Ecclesiastical Intelligence Colonial appointments 4. ^The Times, Monday, 16 May 1910; pg. 8; Issue 39273; col B New Bishop Of Lucknow 5. ^Tuesday, 17 January 1928; pg. 16; Issue 44792; col D Obituary: Rt Rev GH Westcott 8 : 1862 births|People educated at Marlborough College|Alumni of Peterhouse, Cambridge|Anglican Bishops of Lucknow|1928 deaths|People of British India|Anglican missionaries in India|English Anglican missionaries |
