Its seat is the town of Prószków (Proskau), which lies approximately {{convert|11|km|mi|0}} south-west of the regional capital Opole. The gmina covers an area of {{convert|121.23|km2|sqmi|1}}, and as of 2006 its total population is 9,964 (out of which the population of Prószków amounts to 2,713, and the population of the rural part of the gmina is 7,251). Since 2006 the commune, like most of the area, has been bilingual in German and Polish, a substantial German population having remained behind after the area was transferred to Poland.
