Its elevation is 699 feet (213 m).[1] It was the birthplace of Western Kentucky University basketball coach Edgar Diddle. HistoryA post office was established in the community in 1848, and given the name of its first postmaster, William F. Grady.[2] In February 1882, an Act of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky was approved that prohibited the sale of alcoholic beverages within one mile of Wilmores and Kemp's store-house in Gradyville.[3] The Act imposed a $20 fine for each occurrence of violating the act.[3] Gradyville suffered a flash flood on June 7, 1907, as the result of a cloudburst that precipitated three inches of rain in an hour. The sudden downfall caused Big Creek, a normally small and quiet stream that runs through Gradyville,[4] to rise by ten feet and to wash away several houses that were built on the banks of the creek. The flood resulted in the deaths of 20 Gradyville residents.[5] Notable peopleEdgar Diddle, an American college men's basketball coach, was born near Gradyville in 1895 and was a Gradyville native.[6][7]References1. ^{{gnis|493073}} {{Adair County, Kentucky}}{{AdairCountyKY-geo-stub}}2. ^{{cite book | url=https://books.google.com/books?id=3Lac2FUSj_oC&lpg=PA49&dq=cannon%20ky&pg=PA121#v=onepage&q=cannon%20ky&f=false | title=Kentucky Place Names | publisher=University Press of Kentucky | year=1987 | accessdate=2013-04-28 | author=Rennick, Robert M. | pages=121–122}} 3. ^1 {{cite book | title=Acts of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky | series=Session laws of American states and territories prior to 1900 | year=1882 | url=https://books.google.com/books?id=kTpNAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA569 | access-date=September 22, 2018 | page=569}} 4. ^{{cite web | title=Ottillia Scott Bell Credited With Saving Lives In The Flood | website=Columbia Magazine | date=June 16, 1997 | url=http://www.columbiamagazine.com/index.php?sid=10129 | access-date=September 22, 2018}} 5. ^Columbia Magazine, Gradyville Flood Special Issue. 6. ^{{cite book | last=Holl | first=R.E. | title=Committed to Victory: The Kentucky Home Front During World War II | publisher=University Press of Kentucky | series=Topics in Kentucky History | year=2015 | isbn=978-0-8131-6564-6 | url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Lqt3CgAAQBAJ&pg=PT270 | access-date=September 22, 2018 | page=pt270}} 7. ^{{cite book | last=Jackson | first=H.H. | title=The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture: Volume 16: Sports and Recreation | publisher=University of North Carolina Press | series=The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture | year=2014 | isbn=978-1-4696-1676-6 | url=https://books.google.com/books?id=eSiaAgAAQBAJ&pg=PA33 | access-date=September 22, 2018 | page=33}} 2 : Unincorporated communities in Adair County, Kentucky|Unincorporated communities in Kentucky |
