Grand Island Senior High is a high school in the Grand Island Public Schools (GIPS) system in Nebraska, United States. It has had several buildings over its history. The official mascot is the Islander, a tall man in a tropical grass skirt.

The school has over 2,200 students and over 300 staff members.

Current building

The current building has been located at 2124 Lafayette Avenue since the 1950s. Originally the structure had four main wings, two gymnasiums, and an auditorium. In 1994, the City of Grand Island approved a major addition to the school due to an increasing student population. The addition, completed in 1997, included a fifth wing on the main floor, a sixth wing built above the fifth, a second cafeteria, and a three-court gymnasium.[1]

Former buildings

The first school by this name was located on the corner of Walnut and 1st Streets, now a parking lot, from 1879 to 1874. It was a K-12 school, built on land donated by the Union Pacific railroad, and named the Dodge School after Major General Grenville M. Dodge, chief engineer of the Union Pacific Railroad.

In 1908, a new building was built for high school students at 10th Street and Walnut Street. Two new wings were later added, which are the only parts of the building surviving today.{{Citation needed|date=October 2013}}

In 1925, a new building was constructed at 500 Walnut Street; the 1908 building was turned into a junior high school.

In 1955, a fourth building was constructed in the 2100 block of Lafayette Avenue and its predecessor became Walnut Junior High.[2] In 1999, the Walnut Street building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.[3]

In the late 1990s, a two-story section was added onto the main building.[4]
