He served as the head football coach at Langston University from 1992 to 1996 at and Prairie View A&M University from 1997 to 1998, compiling a career college record of 36–49. On January 31, 2012 it was announced that Johnson has been hired by Texas Southern to be the associate head coach, co-defensive coordinator, and cornerbacks coach.[3] Coaching careerJohnson was the 19th head football coach at Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas and he held that position for two seasons, from 1997 until 1998. His record at Prairie View was 1–19.[4][5] Johnson lost the first 12 games of his career—part of an 80-game losing streak over parts of 10 seasons, the longest in NCAA history.[6] However, it was in the fourth game of his second season as head coach when the streak was broken by a 14–12 victory over Langston.[7][8][9] Tensions over the losing streak had grown so high at the school that the entire marching band was suspended by the conference the week before as a result of fighting between marching bands.[10] Head coaching record{{CFB Yearly Record Start | type = coach | team = | conf = | bowl = | poll = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Subhead| name = Langston Lions | conf = | startyear = 1992 | endyear = 1996 }}{{CFB Yearly Record Subhead | name = Prairie View A&M Panthers | conf = Southwestern Athletic Conference | startyear = 1997 | endyear = 1998 }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1997 | name = Prairie View A&M | overall = 0–9 | conference = 0–8 | confstanding = 9th | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | bcsbowl = | ranking = no | ranking2 = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1998 | name = Prairie View A&M | overall = 1–10 | conference = 0–8 | confstanding = 9th | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | bcsbowl = | ranking = no | ranking2 = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Subtotal | name = Prairie View A&M | overall = 1–19 | confrecord = 0–16 }}{{CFB Yearly Record Subhead | name = Langston Lions | conf = | startyear = 2004 | endyear = 2010 }}{{CFB Yearly Record Subtotal | name = Langston | overall = 81–57 | confrecord = }}{{CFB Yearly Record End | overall = 82–76 | bowls = no | poll = no | polltype = | legend = no }} References1. ^{{cite web|author=Bob Colon |url=http://newsok.com/article/1960757 |title=Langston hires football coach |publisher=News OK |date=December 18, 2003 |accessdate=December 3, 2016}} {{Langston Lions football coach navbox}}{{Prairie View A&M Panthers football coach navbox}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Johnson, Greg}}2. ^{{cite web|author=Murray Evans |url=http://newsok.com/article/2571609 |title=Langston Coach Johnson Resigns Takes Prairie View A&M Job |publisher=News OK |date=February 6, 1997 |accessdate=December 3, 2016}} 3. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.tsuball.com/news/2012/1/31/FB_0131121133.aspx?path=football |title=New Team of TSU Football Coaches now on Board |publisher=Texas Southern Athletics |accessdate=January 13, 2012}} 4. ^Prairie View A&M University coaching records {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090107172242/http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_iaa/southwestern/prairie_view_a%26m/coaching_records.php |date=2009-01-07 }} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.sportsnetwork.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=sportsnetwork&page=cfoot2/teams/direct582.htm |title=Prairie View Agricultural & Mechanical University Directory |publisher=The Sports Network |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20110525193829/http://www.sportsnetwork.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=sportsnetwork&page=cfoot2%2Fteams%2Fdirect582.htm |archivedate=2011-05-25 |df= }} 6. ^Sports Illustrated Memorable Losing Streaks, Prairie View A&M 7. ^Sports Illustrated "It's over - Prairie View finally ends 80-game losing streak" 8. ^Black Issues in Higher Education, "Play ball, for now" October 29, 1998 9. ^Prairie View 1998 schedule results 10. ^SWAC Suspends PVAMU and SU Marching Bands 7 : Year of birth missing (living people)|Living people|Northwestern Oklahoma State Rangers football players|Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies football coaches|Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles football coaches|Langston Lions football coaches|Prairie View A&M Panthers football coaches |
