Playing careerSmith made his one and only appearance for Newcastle against Canterbury in Round 3 1999. Smith is known in rugby league folklore as having one of the worst debuts in the modern game. During the match, Smith dropped the ball multiple times, missed tackles and let in 2 tries as Canterbury came back from a 24-4 scoreline to win 28-4. In the aftermath of the game it was revealed that Smith had told Newcastle he had played for the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL.
