{{Infobox_gene}}Glutamate receptor, ionotropic kainate 5 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the GRIK5 gene.[1][2] Function This gene encodes a protein that belongs to the glutamate-gated ionic channel family. Glutamate functions as the major excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system through activation of ligand-gated ion channels and G protein-coupled membrane receptors. The protein encoded by this gene forms functional heteromeric kainate-preferring ionic channels with the subunits encoded by related gene family members.[2] Interactions GRIK5 has been shown to interact with DLG4[3][4] and GRIK2.[5][6] See also References 1. ^{{cite journal |vauthors=Szpirer C, Molne M, Antonacci R, Jenkins NA, Finelli P, Szpirer J, Riviere M, Rocchi M, Gilbert DJ, Copeland NG | title = The genes encoding the glutamate receptor subunits KA1 and KA2 (GRIK4 and GRIK5) are located on separate chromosomes in human, mouse, and rat | journal = Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A | volume = 91 | issue = 25 | pages = 11849–53 |date=January 1995 | pmid = 7527545 | pmc = 45333 | doi =10.1073/pnas.91.25.11849 |display-authors=etal}} 2. ^1 {{cite web | title = Entrez Gene: GRIK5 glutamate receptor, ionotropic, kainate 5| url = https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?Db=gene&Cmd=ShowDetailView&TermToSearch=2901| accessdate = }} 3. ^{{cite journal |vauthors=Mehta S, Wu H, Garner CC, Marshall J | title = Molecular mechanisms regulating the differential association of kainate receptor subunits with SAP90/PSD-95 and SAP97 | journal = J.
