Jeonju ({{IPA-ko|tɕʌn.dʑu}}) is the 16th largest city in South Korea and the capital of North Jeolla Province. It is both urban and rural due to the closeness of Wanju County which almost entirely surrounds Jeonju. (Wanju County has many residents who work in Jeonju.) The name Jeonju literally means "Perfect Region" (from the hanja {{lang|ko|{{linktext|全}}}} ({{lang|ko|{{linktext|전}}}}; jeon) for perfect, {{lang|ko|{{linktext|州}}}} ({{lang|ko|{{linktext|주}}}}; ju) for region). It is an important tourist center famous for Korean food, historic buildings, sports activities, and innovative festivals. In May 2012, Jeonju was chosen as a Creative Cities for Gastronomy as part of UNESCO's Creative Cities Network. This honour recognizes the city's traditional home cooking handed down over thousands of years, its active public and private food research, a system of nurturing talented chefs, and its hosting of distinctive food festivals.[1] HistoryIn the fertile Honam plain, famous for Jeonju Hanok Village and exceptional produce, Jeonju has been an important regional center in the province for centuries. The city was the capital of Hubaekje Kingdom, which was founded by Gyeon Hwon. Under Hubaekje, it was known as Wansanju. It was regarded as the spiritual capital of the Joseon Dynasty because the Yi royal family originated there. The town was occupied by the Donghak peasants' movement in 1894.[2] Jeonju was given metropolitan status in 1935, and the city was founded in 1949.[3] Since Joseon, it was a metropolis but, left behind the industrialization, it declined compared. It does not have the infrastructure, manufacturing, or heavy industries found in other Korean major cities. Today, Traditional Tour is a major industry in the city. Culture
The local mountains and parks are popular for outdoor recreation due to its rural location. There are historical sites in the area. The city has a zoo, a park, and the Hanguk Sound and Culture Hall, a large, modern concert complex on the Chonbuk National University campus. Notable people
Administrative districtsJeonju is divided into two wards, Deokjin-gu (덕진구) and Wansan-gu (완산구) that, in turn, are divided into approximately 40 neighborhoods. TransportationMany city buses and taxis are available in Jeonju. However, tourists are often advised to walk between points of interest, as many attractions are near each other.[7] Attractions
SportsJeonju hosts K League team Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC. The team's home ground is the Jeonju World Cup Stadium.[9] Climate{{Weather box| location = Jeonju (1981–2010, extremes 1918–present) | metric first = Y | single line = Y | Jan record high C = 18.3 | Feb record high C = 21.9 | Mar record high C = 28.2 | Apr record high C = 31.2 | May record high C = 35.1 | Jun record high C = 35.8 | Jul record high C = 38.6 | Aug record high C = 38.3 | Sep record high C = 34.5 | Oct record high C = 30.8 | Nov record high C = 28.0 | Dec record high C = 23.0 | year record high C = 38.6 | Jan high C = 4.4 | Feb high C = 6.9 | Mar high C = 12.4 | Apr high C = 19.6 | May high C = 24.5 | Jun high C = 27.9 | Jul high C = 30.2 | Aug high C = 31.0 | Sep high C = 27.0 | Oct high C = 21.5 | Nov high C = 13.9 | Dec high C = 7.1 | year high C = 18.9 | Jan mean C = -0.5 | Feb mean C = 1.5 | Mar mean C = 6.3 | Apr mean C = 12.8 | May mean C = 18.2 | Jun mean C = 22.5 | Jul mean C = 25.8 | Aug mean C = 26.2 | Sep mean C = 21.5 | Oct mean C = 15.0 | Nov mean C = 8.3 | Dec mean C = 2.2 | year mean C = 13.3 | Jan low C = -4.6 | Feb low C = -3.0 | Mar low C = 1.2 | Apr low C = 6.7 | May low C = 12.5 | Jun low C = 17.8 | Jul low C = 22.4 | Aug low C = 22.6 | Sep low C = 17.1 | Oct low C = 9.8 | Nov low C = 3.5 | Dec low C = -2.2 | year low C = 8.6 | Jan record low C = -17.1 | Feb record low C = -16.6 | Mar record low C = -12.2 | Apr record low C = -3.9 | May record low C = 2.2 | Jun record low C = 8.2 | Jul record low C = 12.1 | Aug record low C = 12.5 | Sep record low C = 4.0 | Oct record low C = -2.7 | Nov record low C = -8.4 | Dec record low C = -15.0 | year record low C = -17.1 |precipitation colour = green | Jan precipitation mm = 32.7 | Feb precipitation mm = 40.0 | Mar precipitation mm = 54.3 | Apr precipitation mm = 77.3 | May precipitation mm = 91.5 | Jun precipitation mm = 167.9 | Jul precipitation mm = 299.6 | Aug precipitation mm = 277.5 | Sep precipitation mm = 137.6 | Oct precipitation mm = 53.5 | Nov precipitation mm = 50.2 | Dec precipitation mm = 31.1 | year precipitation mm = 1313.1 | Jan humidity = 68.6 | Feb humidity = 66.5 | Mar humidity = 63.7 | Apr humidity = 60.6 | May humidity = 65.3 | Jun humidity = 71.3 | Jul humidity = 77.5 | Aug humidity = 76.7 | Sep humidity = 74.1 | Oct humidity = 70.4 | Nov humidity = 69.1 | Dec humidity = 68.9 | year humidity = 69.4 | unit precipitation days = 0.1 mm | Jan precipitation days = 9.3 | Feb precipitation days = 7.8 | Mar precipitation days = 10.3 | Apr precipitation days = 8.6 | May precipitation days = 9.2 | Jun precipitation days = 10.7 | Jul precipitation days = 15.9 | Aug precipitation days = 15.5 | Sep precipitation days = 9.7 | Oct precipitation days = 6.7 | Nov precipitation days = 9.1 | Dec precipitation days = 9.4 |year precipitation days = | Jan snow days = 8.7 | Feb snow days = 5.6 | Mar snow days = 2.7 | Apr snow days = 0.1 | May snow days = 0.0 | Jun snow days = 0.0 | Jul snow days = 0.0 | Aug snow days = 0.0 | Sep snow days = 0.0 | Oct snow days = 0.0 | Nov snow days = 1.5 | Dec snow days = 6.7 | year snow days = 25.4 | Jan sun = 151.6 | Feb sun = 157.7 | Mar sun = 185.9 | Apr sun = 211.7 | May sun = 217.9 | Jun sun = 172.7 | Jul sun = 136.7 | Aug sun = 160.6 | Sep sun = 168.1 | Oct sun = 194.6 | Nov sun = 154.5 | Dec sun = 142.3 | year sun = 2054.5 |Jan percentsun = 48.7 |Feb percentsun = 51.3 |Mar percentsun = 50.1 |Apr percentsun = 53.9 |May percentsun = 50.0 |Jun percentsun = 39.6 |Jul percentsun = 30.8 |Aug percentsun = 38.4 |Sep percentsun = 45.1 |Oct percentsun = 55.6 |Nov percentsun = 50.0 |Dec percentsun = 47.0 |year percentsun = 46.2 | source = Korea Meteorological Administration[10][11][12] (percent sunshine and snowy days)[13] | date = May 2011}} Jeonju has a cooler version of a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa/Cwa). Jeonju, like all of Korea, has four distinct seasons (spring, summer, fall, and winter). The winters can have a mix of days that are cool to days that are quite cold. The colder days are often influenced by a high pressure front that brings cold air from Siberia. In the summer, the humidity over the Korean peninsula from June through September comes from southeast Asia. Temperatures in spring (late April and through May) and fall (after September 25 and though October) are often in the mid-20s℃ and with low humidity. Sister cities
