The railway ran from Rutherford, New Jersey to Hackensack, New Jersey and service started in 1858. Construction along a northward extension of the line known as the Hackensack and New York Extension Railroad under the leadership of David P. Patterson started in 1866. Service to Hillsdale opened on March 4, 1870.[2] The company is said to have gone into receivership by 1878[3] and reorganized as the New Jersey and New York Railroad, extended into Rockland County, New York and leased by the Erie Railroad in 1896.[4] The track right of way is now New Jersey Transit's Pascack Valley Line.[5] References1. ^{{cite book|last=Yanosey|first=Robert J.|title=Erie Railroad Facilities (In Color)|publisher=Morning Sun Books Inc.|location=Scotch Plains, New Jersey|date=2006|volume=1|pages=95|isbn=1-58248-183-0}} {{DEFAULTSORT:Hackensack and New York Railroad}}{{US-rail-transport-stub}}2. ^{{cite news|last=Mrnarevic|first=Karen F.|date=10 December 2009|url=http://www.northjersey.com/news/78940177.html|title=Hillsdale's history 'tied' to the railroad|work=Pascack Valley Community Life|publisher=NorthJersey.com|accessdate=2010-11-09|deadurl=yes|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20120902044554/http://www.northjersey.com/news/78940177.html|archivedate=2 September 2012|df=}} 3. ^{{cite book|author=Friends of the Township of Washington Public Library|author2=Howard I.
