DescriptionIt is an erect shrub/small tree growing between {{convert|2-5|m|ft|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} tall, resprouting from a lignotuber .[1] It has long, narrow leaves {{convert|3-18|cm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|1-4|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide with a prominent longitudinal vein.[1] White conflorescences with 6-18 flowers appear in the leaf axils in spring.[2] The fruit grow on a short stalk are ovate or obliquely ovate {{convert|1.6-2.5|cm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long by {{convert|8-11|cm|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide with a short beak.[3] Taxonomy and namingThe species was first formally described by Robert Brown in Supplementum primum prodromi florae Novae Hollandiae in 1830, based on plant material collected by William Baxter in Wilsons Promontory.[4] Named from the Latin ulex for the genus of plants which includes furze (Ulex europaeus), and believed to be a resemblance to the habit or the leaves of this species.[3] Distribution and habitatThe species occurs on the southern slopes of the Great Dividing Range as well as in coastal heathland. It is mostly found from the east of Port Phillip Bay in Victoria through to Eden in south-eastern New South Wales.
