It is set in the city and surrounding areas of contemporary São Paulo, Brazil, and follows the story of a young, favela-born man, Ludo dos Santos. The book was nominated for the 2009 Man Booker Prize and is Scudamore's second novel.[1] ReceptionCritic Henry Shukman of The Guardian notes, "The novel is cleverly pitched to explore the two socioeconomic poles of modern urban Brazil. And the writing is exemplary: you feel the hand of a natural at work, one whose command of tone is strong, and who has an instinctive feel for handling a story."[2] Writing in The Telegraph of London, reviewer Sinclair McKay calls the novel "a dark, gripping, often comic novel concerning appetite, urban poverty and identity."[3] Heliopolis was listed as one of the final dozen nominees for the 2009 Man Booker Prize.[1] Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall ultimately won.[4]Notes1. ^1 {{cite web|title=Judges decide on Man Booker Dozen|url=http://www.themanbookerprize.com/news/stories/1252|work=The Man Booker Prizes - News|publisher=The Booker Prize Foundation|accessdate=26 April 2012|deadurl=yes|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20120521100443/http://www.themanbookerprize.com/news/stories/1252|archivedate=21 May 2012|df=}} 2. ^{{cite news|last=Shukman|first=Henry|title=Flight from the favela|url=https://www.theguardian.com/books/2009/jan/31/heliopolis-review-scudamore|accessdate=26 April 2012|newspaper=The Guardian (UK)|date=30 Jan 2009}} 3. ^{{cite news|last=McKay|first=Sinclair|title=Heliopolis by James Scudamore - review|url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/bookreviews/4296939/Heliopolis-by-James-Scudamore-review.html|accessdate=26 April 2012|newspaper=The Telegraph (UK)|date=20 Jan 2009}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Wolf Hall wins the 2009 Man Booker Prize for Fiction|url=http://www.themanbookerprize.com/news/stories/1291|work=The Man Booker Prizes - News|publisher=The Booker Prize Foundation|accessdate=26 April 2012}} External links
